    Another Police Shooting

Police Fatally Shoot Man Holding Meat Cleaver

    POSTED: 8:10 pm CDT June 14, 2007
    UPDATED: 8:39 pm CDT June 14, 2007

CHICAGO -- A man was fatally shot by police Thursday on the South Side after coming at two female officers with weapons in both hands.

Two Deering District officers responded to a 911 call in the 4500 block of South Wood Street at about 4:45 p.m. for a report of a man pouring lighter fluid on his body, police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden said. The man, possibly 28 years old, was spotted by police in a nearby alley with a meat cleaver in one hand and a metal pipe in the other.

The two officers repeatedly told the man to put down his weapons, but he refused, forcing an officer to spray the man with mace, Camden said. The mace did not slow down the man, and he kept proceeding towards the officers. An officer then was forced to fire her weapon, Camden said.

A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the fatality about 6:40 p.m.

The incident was the third police-involved shooting in six days.

One man, Shannon Kraft, was fatally shot by police on June 9 on the Northwest Side after he approached police with a bayonet and machete in his hands.

Another man, Derrick Traylor Jr., who allegedly was involved in a gun battle with his father on a South Side street, was shot by police on Sunday. Traylor was charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer.

Police will hold a roundtable discussion on Thursday's shooting in the upcoming days, Camden said.

Sounds like a good shooting to me.

I agree but I feel sorry for the officers.

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.
