Blind, drunk, banned driver go on guess what he did?
Thats right he got in a car and drove
11:00 - 15 June 2007
A Man who is almost blind was caught driving a car while over the drink-drive limit.
Peter Tassi, 45, was stopped for driving too slowly and breathalysed. He had 88mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The limit is 80mg.
He had already been ordered to stop driving because of his eyesight, and was disqualified for ten years in 2006 for motoring offences.
He has five previous convictions for drink driving and four for driving while disqualified.
Nottingham magistrates heard Tassi was caught in a Volvo in Kneeton Vale, Sherwood, on Sunday, April 15.
Chris Brewin, representing Tassi, said: "He is almost blind in his right eye and is partially sighted in his left eye, but it is getting worse all the time."
Tassi has glaucoma, which was aggravated when he contracted malaria while doing voluntary work in Malawi.
Mr Brewin said Tassi has between five and 50% sight, varying from day to day.
In mitigation, the court heard Tassi had been hospitalised when his nephew threw a trowel at him and hit him on the forehead, leaving him with memory problems.
The court also heard that Tassi battled alcoholism.
References in support of Tassi were submitted to the court from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and the Royal Society for the Blind.
Tassi, of Chippenham Road, Daybrook, admitted driving with excess alcohol, driving without insurance, and driving while banned.
Magistrates deferred sentencing for six months. He was ordered to attend The Priory rehabilitation clinic
He will appear in court again on December 3 to decide if further action is needed. michael.greenwell@notinghameve ningpost.co.uk

The magistrates probably deffered sentence to give themselves time to stop laughingthe sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.
