Call for calm over custody death

THE Queensland Government appealed for calm today as another Aboriginal death in custody sparked fears of a repeat of the Palm Island case. The Government has promised a thorough investigation into how a 44-year-old Aboriginal man died in the back of a police van near Mareeba, in far north Queensland, shortly after 9am (AEST) today. Two police officers stationed at Dimbulah, 40km west of Mareeba, were taking the man into custody to the Mareeba police station in relation to an alleged theft. The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was said to have suffered breathing difficulties.
An ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said the death would be treated as suspicious, but it appeared to be "just a tragic set of circumstances".

The death comes less than a week after Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley was cleared of the assault and manslaughter of Mulrunji Doomadgee in the Palm Island watchhouse in 2004. Mulrunji's death sparked riots on Palm Island and the fallout is still continuing from the case and last week's controversial jury verdict clearing Snr Sgt Hurley. But Premier Peter Beattie urged Queenslanders not to draw comparisons between the two cases until the facts were established.

"I just urge everybody to please wait until we know the facts of this case," Mr Beattie said. The death would be fully investigated, Mr Beattie said, as had been done with the Palm Island case. "I think we've demonstrated as a government we're serious about properly and fully investigating black deaths in custody," he said.

However, Tablelands Community Justice Group coordinator Carol Chong said any Aboriginal death in custody raised "huge concerns" in indigenous communities in the wake of the Palm Island case.

"Everyone seems to be quite shocked about the (latest) matter and it sort of reflects back to what happened on Palm Island with the Mulrunji Doomadgee case," Ms Chong said.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission is overseeing a Queensland Police Service ethical standards command probe into the latest death. The coroner's office has also been called in to investigate.
Mr Atkinson said the man did not resist arrest, and there were no signs of an altercation. "They (the officers) were conversing with the person who was in the rear of the van that they were travelling in, and he became short of breath," Mr Atkinson said.

"They stopped, rendered assistance, called an ambulance, the ambulance attended.

"Later a doctor attended, but regrettably, the person was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Mr Atkinson said two investigators and a forensic expert would travel to Mareeba as part of the investigations. He said the two Dimbulah officers, believed to be a sergeant and senior constable, would be part of the probe and would not be stood down. A senior officer will be appointed to advise the dead man's relatives and the far north Queensland indigenous community on the progress of the investigations.

He's a social activist. Very well respected in the United States. We are all blessed to have his input into our race relation problems. I highly recommend him. I think you guys should take up a collection and buy him a ticket (one-way would be fine), to come down there and straighten this whole mess out...

Yes. He's such a wonderful guy. I think you Aussies should keep him. No, no, we'll be fine. We'll manage without him... somehow. But y'all definitely need him more than us. (He means Al Sharpton.)

It would be a terrible tragedy if the small, remote controlled plane they were in would crash into the ocean, wouldn't it? And if it were to have been caused by a bolt of lightning from the clear blue sky....
