Man killed as more storms threaten Vic
Man killed as more storms threaten Vic
June 28, 2007
A 60-year-old man has died while sleeping in his bed after a tree fell on his house overnight at Mt Macedon, north-west of Melbourne.
The 30-metre tree crashed on the house about 11.15pm (AEST) last night, but gale force winds made it unsafe for Victoria Police search and rescue squad and local CFA members to start removing the fallen tree until late this morning.
Meanwhile in Victoria's south-east, Gippsland residents were on high alert as rivers and creeks started to peak following two days of heavy rain. The weather bureau has issued major flood warnings for the Avon. Mitchell, McAlister, and Thomson rivers and the Traralgon Creek. Residents of the Stratford caravan park on the Avon River north of sale were evacuated last night and Mitchell river caravan park residents were evacuated this morning. Sanbbag levies are being built in major towns to protect homes and businesses in anticipation of rising river and creek levels.
Aleady many highways and roads in the area have been temporaily closed because of flash flooding. Meanwhile, in southern NSW, a 24-year-old woman, suffering shortness of breath, made a triple-0 call about 6pm (AEST) yesterday after a power failure at her property on Calabash Road at Michelago.
An ambulance crew set out in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, but they were blocked by waist-deep snow and a large number of fallen trees on the road. An air ambulance emergency helicopter was unable to reach the woman because of the blizzard. The woman, who was alone in the house, told ambulance officers that she was near a fire. She remained stable but short of breath. Crews from the Perisher Valley ambulance station put snowmobiles on trailers and drove to Michelago. With most of the trees removed, paramedics used a snowmobile for the final 8km of the journey and reached the woman shortly before 1am (AEST) today, while efforts to clear the road continued. A four-wheel drive ambulance was finally able to pick up the woman about 1.30am
