S. Fayette police officer facing federal cocaine trafficking charge

A South Fayette police officer appeared in federal court yesterday on charges of conspiring to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine.

Patrolman Bernard J. Golling was arrested, along with another man, Michael Edward Monz.

According to a criminal complaint, the men received a package containing cocaine at a home on Sleepy Hollow Road in Mt. Lebanon.

Agents with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration first discovered the package at a Federal Express facility on Vista Park Drive in Robinson just before 7 a.m. Tuesday.

There, they found a 20-by-22-by-12-inch cardboard box shipped from Las Vegas and slated to be sent to a Dan Hellman, at an address on Sleepy Hollow Road.

Police suspected the package contained drugs because all of the seams had been heavily taped, the shipping was paid in cash and police could not find a Dan Hellman at the address.

A drug dog alerted on it, confirming their suspicions, and investigators obtained a search warrant to open it.

The package weighed 25 pounds and contained approximately 4 kilograms of cocaine, court documents said.

Investigators then planned a controlled delivery of the package. They removed all but 3 ounces of cocaine and replaced the rest with white powder and rewrapped it.

At 1:41 p.m., they delivered the package to the home. There was no answer, and the box was left on the front step.

About 30 minutes later, investigators said, Mr. Golling arrived at the residence, in full police uniform. He went inside first and then retrieved the parcel two minutes later. A few minutes later, Mr. Monz arrived.

After going into the house, according to the criminal complaint, Mr. Monz exited three minutes later, went to his car and talked on his cell phone.

"After approximately two minutes, Monz exited the vehicle," the paperwork read. "While still conversing on the cellular telephone, Monz slowly walked back to the residence while looking up and down the street."

At 2:25 p.m., Mr. Golling opened the front door carrying the package, and Mr. Monz also exited. They were arrested by officers who had been conducting surveillance.

According to the criminal complaint, after being given their Miranda warning, both admitted their involvement in the crime.

A detention hearing has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Pupo Lenihan.

South Fayette police Chief Louis Volle did not return a call yesterday.

In addition to the conspiracy count, both men are also charged with possession with intent to distribute.

They face a minimum prison term of five years if convicted.

Unfortunately, those few bad ones get all the attention. There's something just so wrong with that.

It is unfortunate but yes that is the truth but as long as the bad is weeded out the good will prevail and come out on top where it belongs.
