Funeral Escort Crashes when SUV Tries to Cut through Procession

A police man on a motorcycle was involved in an accident while escorting a funeral. A man on a motorcycle with the funeral police escort service was escorting cars, when a SUV tried to cut through the line of vehicles. The biker sped up in an attempt to bar entrance to the large vehicle. But that's when the biker was cut off and skidded onto the road.

Holy Shit, Didn't know those little SUV's were that easy to roll over.
Just because your sign off after you're shift is done, doesn't mean that it's over and put blinders on. You're a cop 24/7 wether you like it or not. If thats something you can't handle, you should find a new line of work!

That is the reason I don't escort funerals. I had two of my friends seriously injured the same way. Some ignorant ass people care more about their own selfish lives than about funeral processions.

On a side note, as a Police Driving Instructor , I would like to point out that the officer could have avoided laying the bike down if he would have steered behind the SUV instead of trying to turn the same way it was going.

I've lost count of how many douchebags try to cut in, through, and around a funeral procession. I wish I could drag out of the car and beat every last one of them.

    We don't do funeral escorts.

In fact, we don't do ANY escorts.

The driver thought she could dash across obviously.

I don't think it's unusual to tape funerals from beginning to end these days....it's how people share with those that can't be present.

I was pleased to see they put the camera down immediately to check on the officer.

Not sticking up for the Suv driver, but why in the hell, was the PO-Po on the cycle, going mock ten to begin with.
he wasnt just going 15 mph, that dude was flying.( its a funeral procession ) theres no reason for his speed!
also, it appears, that he steered right into the side of the suv, and didnt try to avoid the collision. WTF...

i guess theres alot of unanswered questions here??????????????

Looked to me like he might have been leap frogging the procession to stop traffic at intersections as the lead car got there. It looked like he was buzzing on ahead to the next intersection when the SUV violated his right of way.

"Miss Lord Help us" has been listening to "Jesus Take the Wheel" too much. Pay attention to your driving!

From her video I count a 4 second following distance. (going by the shadows on this part of the video) At that point it's not a procession, it's light traffic.

I went frame by frame and could see no evidence of her lights being on either. Crappy video, but still only the faintest light glint off a couple needs on the dash and no backlit buttons on the radio. Though if her car has DRLs and she decided that was enough there wouldn't be interior lighting of course.

Obviously the SUV driver is at fault, but she's not the only one, IMO.

Now for an update on the story.

Funeral's motorcycle escort recovering after accident with SUV

    Associated Press - July 23, 2007 10:55 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A Columbus man involved in an accident while escorting a funeral procession is recovering today.

John Robinson, an employee of privately owned Funeral Police Escort, was trying to stop a sport utility vehicle from cutting through the procession on Saturday.

A video shows the 71-year-old's motorcycle skidding to the pavement just before hitting the side of the SUV.

Robinson suffered a broken pelvis, a broken ankle, a broken wrist, two broken ribs and also had his front teeth knocked out.

Jeannette Semones, the owner of Funeral Police Escort, says Robinson underwent surgery yesterday at Riverside Methodist Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV was not seriously hurt and was cited for interfering with a funeral procession.

Wow, what an idiot. It seems to me like the majority of the public don't realize that funeral processions can run red lights (when having already gone through when it was green) and that you shouldn't cut through or in front of them.

Privately owned Funeral Police Escort? I've never heard of anything like that.

We have them here BCup. They are dressed in uniforms VERY similar to a motor cop, and have red and blues and sirens. They are considered emergency vehicles ONLY during processions. The reason why statute allows this is so if someone disobeys their order to stop while the procession passes, it's jst like ignoring a cop direction traffic. They can detain a violator with the use of their red and blues, call us, and we can write a citation for the violation...the same one we would write if I was directing traffic and someone ignored me.

Usually officer or officers (at least here) have to go from one end to the other. Sometimes not enough officers to work the procession.

    Lots o questions

I suspect it's because he was 71...poor guy.

I can almost hear him saying..."you'd better stop, you whippersnapper!"
