Chicago Immigration Activist Taken Into Custody Sunday Afternoon

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Elvira Arrellano, a Mexican woman who sought sanctuary from deportation in a Chicago church was arrested Sunday in Los Angeles.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency would not confirm Arrellano was taken in by ICE agents on Olvera Street, near La Placita Church, in the Los Angeles Civic Center area at about 3 p.m.

Arellano and her son Saul, 8, who is a U.S. citizen, were in Los Angeles seeking immigration reform and were staying at La Placita Church.

She visited three area churches to speak about immigration, but was arrested before she could go to a fourth church.

Arellano defied a deportation order to report to the Department of Homeland Security on Aug. 15, 2006. Instead, she sought refuge in the Adalberto United Methodist Church in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago.

I am thrilled to see this arrest!! Activist? No, she's a CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIEN! Of course, her "supporters" are vowing to march in Washington, D.C., because "there are bigger fish to fry out there by the federal government." One priest from Chicago who spoke in a news video tonight said the government should spend it's time looking for "real criminals like bin Laden."

And sadly, we don't have to look too hard, eh? On the NBC local affiliate tonight, that same Chicago priest said the arrest of Arrellano was "a cowardly act". GRRRRR! I really need to stop watching the news...

She's been in the US how long? And has claimed sanctuary for an additional year? I wonder how much paperwork she's submitted to be come a legal citizen by now... I'm guessing NONE.

From the Rev. Walter Coleman, pastor of Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago: "She has been deported. She is free and in Tijuana," said Coleman, who said he spoke to her on the phone. "She is in good spirits. She is ready to continue the struggle against the separation of families from the other side of the border."

And, to how long she has been here illegally... "Arellano came to Washington state illegally in 1997. She was deported to Mexico shortly after, but returned and moved to Illinois in 2000, taking a job cleaning planes at O'Hare International Airport."

"She was arrested in 2002 at O'Hare and convicted of working under a false Social Security number. She was to surrender to authorities last August."


On a similar note, this morning I transported a guy to county jail, arrested by last night's shift. This guy said he's been in the U.S. illegally since 1990. He was arrested last night for a felony warrant for domestic violence (he said he never did his anger management classes) from a year ago, plus a misdemeanor warrant for alcohol related charges. Gotta love it...
