Man Gets Life for Murder of Broward Deputy
Man convicted on killing Broward deputy gets life in prison
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A 45-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to life in federal prison without parole for killing a Broward County sheriff's deputy and wounding another three years ago.
Kenneth Wilk was found guilty in June of first-degree murder, second degree-attempted murder, possession of child pornography and obstruction of justice. A jury recommended life in prison. He could have received the death penalty.
During his trial, the jury rejected claims that Wilk suffered from AIDS-related dementia when he shot the deputies. Wilk testified that he thought the deputies were intruders.
Deputy Todd Fatta was fatally shot in 2004 while serving a warrant on Wilk for child pornography charges. Wilk used a high-powered hunting rifle with a bullet that pierced the officer's protective vest. A second deputy was shot in the hand.
Before his sentencing, Wilk apologized for the killing but maintained his innocence.
"Your honor, I am an innocent man. I have been wrongly convicted," Wilk told U.S. District Judge James Cohn, who also imposed a $25,000 fine and ordered Wilk to pay $300,000 in reimbursement for the cost of his trial.
During the trial, Wilk argued that he acted in self-defense, only opening fire after the deputies burst through the living room front door.
Wilk's attorneys said they would appeal the conviction and sentence.Molly Weasley makes Chuck Norris eat his vegetables.

That's a new one. Thankfully it didn't fly or else we would have a ton of new insanity cases on the courts hands....During his trial, the jury rejected claims that Wilk suffered from AIDS-related dementia when he shot the deputies. Wilk testified that he thought the deputies were intruders.
Of course they will................Wilk's attorneys said they would appeal the conviction and sentence.
