Oklahoma crackdown sends illegal aliens running

Mandatory deportation has illegals on the run
State law limiting benefits looms, an estimated 25,000 take to road

Thousands of Hispanics have fled the Tulsa, Okla., area in the shadow of a looming state law that limits benefits and mandates deportation for illegal aliens, according to a report from KTUL television in Tulsa.
The state of Oklahoma recently approved a new law that requires deportation for illegal aliens who are arrested, and limits benefits and jobs to those individuals. The report said in East Tulsa, where a community of Hispanics has grown over recent years, there's been a sudden drop in population.

Business owner Simon Navarro has been in business there 11 years, and said the tough law has chased away 30 percent of the state's Hispanic population.

"Two months ago I heard 25,000 Hispanics have left Oklahoma," he told the station. "They are leaving. A lot have already left.

"People are leaving," he said. "They're scared of the sheriff."

A spokesman for Tulsa's Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Francisco Trevino, said he believes the law – and its results – will hurt restaurants, construction companies and other service corporations such as lawn care.

"They do everything we don't want to do," he said.
    Homebuilders also have expressed concerns.
"Sitting here today I understand it's about rounding up criminals, and illegals," said Paul Kane. "But, the Hispanics are fleeing Oklahoma because they think an anti-Hispanic environment is being created."

However, authorities are making their preparations for a full enforcement of the law when it takes effect in November.

Deputies from the Tulsa County sheriff's office are going through training to handle the apprehension and deportation procedures that are being set up. Their training will prepare them to handle the multiple duties of deputy sheriff as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

When they are finished they will be prepared to identify illegal aliens who commit crimes, and make sure they are deported.
Officials say many of those departing apparently are heading either to Kansas or Arkansas. But that may not be for long, since Arkansas is about to adopt a law similar to Oklahoma's, and Kansas is considering a similar move.

Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz told KTUL that the impact of the illegal alien population is evident all over, especially in the jail.
"We see the effects of gangs, we see the effects of illegal immigrants, we see the effects of drugs, we see the effects of methamphetamines," he said.

"We want to go after the criminal element that we have in this community," added U.S. Rep. John Sullivan. "People that commit crimes, drug trafficking, murder, rape, DUI, carrying a concealed weapon."

The newly trained officers will be on the job as early as October, before the November effective date of the new law. They say the bottom line is that illegal aliens in Tulsa County who commit a crime will be deported.

The state law still may face a legal challenge. Miguel Rivera of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders said it could be in federal court as soon as Oct. 1.

He said the argument likely would be that Oklahoma's House Bill 1804 pre-empts federal immigration law, which is much more lenient than the Oklahoma statute.

The new effort to tighten and enforce immigration limits has prompted a severe reaction. Several billboards have gone up questioning the new law.

One, funded by the United Front Task Force, asks, "Is it OK for Oklahoma to have a law that promotes hate among people?"
The other, by the American Dream Coalition, shows a tearful girl clutching a teddy bear with the statement, "My mommy is not a criminal. She is a hardworking Hispanic woman."

But on the television station's forum page, a listener responded: "We need to put up more signs that say: OKIES don't hate illegal immigrants they just want them legal! Deport all illegal immigrants now."

The Republican who wrote HB 1804, Randy Terrill of Moore, said the plan doesn't discriminate, harass or single out anyone, unless they are breaking the law.

"This isn't about whether you are for or against immigration, or for or against immigrants. It doesn't matter what your skin color is or if you speak with an accent. What matters is if you are in the country legally or illegally. The only people threatened by House Bill 1804 are those who choose to break the law," he said. It eliminates most taxpayer subsidies for illegal immigrants and allows state and local law enforcement officers to verify the residency status of those arrested. It also cracks down on business owners who employ illegal immigrants.

Here, here. Thank you to Oklahoma for leading the way. Other States should soon follow suit.

I hope they win all challenges to their law so more states will follow. And they are right, it has NOTHING to do with race, but everything to do with legality.

I agree to a point... it is a shame that the bad apples have to be the ones that messed it all up... that american dream to come here and make something of yourselves...
it is hard for me to be happy and yet at the same time i am....
    very torn...

gramma came over from ireland with nothing and she and her man at the time built a small empire of happiness as illegals who turned legal....

i wish there was a way... unrealistic as it is.. i know... to just aim this all at the assholes who steal, kill and take advantage... instead of the ones who are working hard to try to make a better life for their family...

and yah.. i know.. im torn as well about them taking jobs cheaper and all that....

i just know that my family came from that after most of them were killed in Ireland.

just personal thoughts and im not going to really gonna get into any big discussion, because i see both sides and I am very torn about all of it.

    Goz,

I see it from another point. I went through a year of fees, paperwork, and government b.s. to get the proper paperwork for my wife and her son. They now have their temporary visas to live and work in the USA. This was all after she was refused a tourist visa when we were engaged, they said because she wasnt married and she wasnt working, didnt matter that she wastn working because she was with me in Haiti. At any time we could have gotten them illegal papers, but of course I'm not going to do that. I chose to do it this way, not just because of the profession Im in, but because this is the way it should be done.

It really upsets me when people take the easy way out, instead of doing things the correct way. We know this more because of our profession, we arrest people all the time who chose the easy way.

The first step is to reduce the illegal population with those that have broken the law in this country, for whatever crime. Next we need to reduce, or eliminate, all governmental assistance to illegals. No free medical, dental, education, welfare, food stamps, etc.

Now someone who is working, never been in any kind of trouble, and has paid their taxes, or is willing to pay ALL back taxes and free services. Then there should be a way for them to fast track to temporary visa status.

This doesnt begin to address all people, or contingencies, but its a beginning point to me. I agree to a point on deportation, and a point to "amnesty".

This is all another case of States having to step in and pick up the pieces after the Federal Government failed miserably to do its job. They have an OBLIGATION to enforce existing laws on the books - Yet they keep writing more laws that they will not enforce.

I personally think the Federal Government doesn't enforce certain laws on purpose - i.e., a public relations scam. Congress knows before they even pass a law that they're not going to fund the enforcement. It isn't a lack of money, it's a matter of Congress not putting the huge amounts of money that they take from us into enforcing the empty laws that they pass just for good P.R.

The most obvious example right now is Iraq - I think it could be done much more cheaply in terms of money and American lives, if we just kept other nations from sending terrorists into Iraq by sealing the borders and make them fight it out internally themselves. We're over there policing THEIR streets, yet we wont even spend the money to police our OWN streets adequately!!!

We could use that money to fund the war against Mexico... I think it's an invasion, and we should make it a war - Not a shooting war, but a war in spirit and commitment to enforce the damn laws.

Glad to see a state step up and commit!!!!, BUT and its a big but.... When a individual city recently tried this they were over ruled by the U.S. supreme court. and told that only the US gov. had the jurisdiction to act on illegal immigration ...and I can see where this might meet the same end..

But I'm glad to see a state try it!
