Here is a case of where I feel the spirit of the law and letter of the law went wrong.
His department clears him and labels it an accident saying there was no intent. Then comes along Maricopa County Sheriff "Joe" trying to make headlines, he has detectives investigate and charge the canine handler. Sheriff Joe says:
A mother in Ohio leaves her child in a car the child dies from the extreme heat and no charges. The prosecutor says:http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/96635
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said it remains unclear why Lovejoy left Bandit, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, in the vehicle Aug. 11. Arpaio said he believes the officer has suffered from the loss, but must be treated like anyone else and face the misdemeanor charge.
I hope for the Sergant's sake the Maricopa County Prosecutor sees it differently than Sheriff "Joe".http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/new...1?OpenDocument
Leaving the child in the car was "a substantial lapse of due care" but did not meet the definition of reckless conduct necessary for prosecution, said Clermont County Prosecutor Don White.
As I understand it the officer was on an extra duty traffic enforcement detail. He decided to take his canine which normally wasn't procedure. The reason he took the canine, was due to a ongoing crime pattern in the town. He wanted to have the canine available in case there was a need in the ongoing crime pattern, I don't remember what it was. So after returning home from the detail and being he normally didn't take the canine on this type of detail, he got distracted. This was due to a family emergency.
Now back to the mother in Ohio who is a vice principal in a school. She forgot her child was in the car because she went and bought donuts for the school faculty, then dropped them off. She normally drops the child off at a babysitter. The child was forgotten and left in the car for seven hours.

From the article posted.
I hope that guy goes to jail for a long time. Fuck him.The sheriff’s investigation showed Bandit was in Lovejoy’s patrol car from about 9 a.m. to shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 11. During that time, the investigation found, the officer ran errands, napped and ate out with his wife.dlefdal said:

I think both actions were as my grandmother used to say, "wicked". And I think both of them need to pay for what they did.

I don't think anything they could do would make the handler feel any worse.
it should be noted that there is a big difference between a dog and a human. it sounds cold but a dog is property.

expecting trouble?" "No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have
brought my rifle."

I brought this up over in GNG on Glocktalk. When the story about the handler was posted you had a ton of the tards calling for the handler's head, wanting him to be locked in a hot car, etc; but when it came down to this gal they either minimized her actions or didn't have the balls to post.

''No but the dog is an Officer/Friend to the handler its more then just property.''
like it stated at the beginning of my post they can't make the handler feel any worse.
the sadness and guilt has to be overwhelming. but it was done in error with no criminal intent. it is not like he was fighting dogs. now leaving a child in a vehicle that is totally on a different level.
