Off-duty deputy robbed of standard-issue gun
08:29 PM CDT on Friday, September 14, 2007
From Staff Reports
An off-duty sheriff's deputy was robbed of his gun at a shopping center Thursday evening. Deputy Booker Kidd was in a parking lot in the 8500 block of Ferguson Road about 7 p.m. when a man robbed a nail salon.
As the robber fled, he encountered the plainclothes deputy and demanded money at gunpoint, Dallas County sheriff's spokesman Michael Ortiz said. When Deputy Kidd opened his wallet, the robber saw his badge and demanded his gun, Deputy Ortiz said.
The robber lifted up Deputy Kidd's shirt and stole his department-issued gun. Deputy Ortiz did not have a detailed description of the robber but said he fled in a black Cadillac Escalade with others inside.
Anyone with information about the robberies can call 214-671-3584.

Jesus. Now that is going to cause some serious ball busting.
And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
In Nomine Patris, Et Filli, Et Spiritus Sancti.

Holy shit. Agreed on the badge wallet thing, athough I still can't get myself to put my creds in a seperate jacket. I have a badge wallet, but the badge is hidden, and the wallet is fully functional without opening the badge part. If the bad guy demands I hand over the wallet? I practice my best plan often at the range...that is whipping the wallet at my attacker's face, getting some lateral movement towards my attackers weak side in the form of one beg sidestep while simultaneously dropping to a kneel, all while drawing my weapon from concealment preparing to fire. It ain't foolproof, but it works for me.
I don't know all the facts, and I don't want to second guess, but at face value it sounds like this guy needed more training on the dynamics and tactical considerations of concealed carry and carrying of credentials. My badge stays concealed until it comes out on MY terms. This is a good reminder that we ALL need to be careful about revealing our trump card during normal everyday activities like removing our wallets in order to pay, etc."If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970

No Monday morning quarterbacking here either but this is a good lesson. Stay alert to threats when you are out, off duty or on. Most of us have a sense for trouble/troublemakers. Watch people, stay alert to your surroundings, and listen to your instincts. Practice physically and in your mind how you will respond to various threats so that it is second nature.

That's a good idea about carrying your badges separate from your wallet... I know people who carry their drivers' license and credit cards in a separate wallet, too, just so if they're robbed all they loose is $20 or whatever. They put expired credit cards in the money wallet just to make it look good

I should probably do that, but I'm running out of pockets
