Ex-Helix High teacher arrested on suspicion of sex with student

LA MESA – Helix High School's former music teacher and band director was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with a student.

Jessica Ashley Kahal, 22, turned herself in to officers about 11:30 a.m. at the police station with her attorney present.

Kahal resigned from the charter school on Oct. 5, after Douglas D. Smith, the school principal, began investigating her relationship with a 17-year-old boy, police and school officials said.

A teacher from another school told Smith about the relationship, said police Lt. Allen White. A school resource officer then interviewed the boy, a senior, who said he and Kahal had sex about five times in the past two months at various locations in the county, police said.

Police detectives who took over the investigation said they also interviewed other witnesses. In the meantime, Kahal resigned from the school and moved out of the county, police said.

Kahal started her teaching and band directing stint in August. Police said this is her first teaching job in the county and that they are checking to see if she taught elsewhere.
Kahal was booked into the Las Colinas women's jail in lieu of $20,000 bail on two counts of unlawful sex with a minor.

School officials released a statement through police that states teachers and all potential employees are fingerprinted and go through background checks before they are hired.

“All teachers hired by the school are highly qualified and anyone with any prior misconduct is not considered for employment,” officials wrote in the statement.
