'Saggy pants' law goes into effect next month
With little additional discussion, the Plaquemine Board of Selectmen voted 5-0 to declare the youth fashion of baggy pants and exposed underwear a public nuisance and to outlaw it in Plaquemine.
The new ordinance itself, however, declares that "any person in any public place or in view of the public found exposing his/her undergarments" is a nuisance.
Conviction of the new crime carries a fine of up to $200 and imprisonment for up to 30 days in jail, or both, for violations within the discretion of the court.
Mayor Mark A. "Tony" Gulotta and City Clerk Shelia H. Migliacio said the legal advertisement of the new ordinance would be published in the POST/SOUTH next week, in the October 18 issue, and take effect 30 days after that.
Police Chief Orian Gulotta said he thought the ordinance would be challenged in court sooner or later, but in the meantime the city police would try to enforce it.
"We'll try," the chief said. "That's all I can say."

I think we should set up "undergarment checkpoints" at all major pedestrian crossings in the area.
Perhaps we could call upon the State Police for manpower...

Speaking of underwear...
A friend of mine in med school is doing a rotation at the VA hospital. He was examining a 60 something year old guy and had to ask him to remove his pants. The guy hesitated, then dropped his pants, revealing a camoflaged thong. I'd have busted out laughing, but my friend kept his composure.
