Arrests in officer murder attempt
Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stolen car hit and seriously injured a police officer.
The blue Vauxhall Corsa hit Pc Jonathan Sherlock and a police car when a stinger device was deployed following a chase near Cockermouth, Cumbria.
Pc Sherlock, 31, was taken to hospital following the incident early on Friday. A 17-year-old and a 14-year-old, both from the Carlisle area, were arrested at the scene.
Police said the Vauxhall was reported stolen from an address in Carlisle about an hour before the crash.
The car later stopped at a petrol station Workington, but its two passengers ran off without paying for fuel.
A police chase then took place when the car was seen driving erratically and at high speed on the A595.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle with the stinger device near Fitz Cottage roundabout, where the road joins the A66, at 0515 BST.
Pc Sherlock, of Carlisle, is being treated at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, where his condition is described as serious but not critical.
Deputy Chief Constable Christine Twigg said: "When an incident like this happens to an officer going about their normal duties it has a major effect on family, colleagues and the wider community. "As a constabulary, we will do everything we can to provide support at this difficult time."

Very glad too hear your P.C. is going to be okay. In the meantime, you should adopt the U.S. custom of "Beat and Release" that works so well on "Problem Youth".
Car 4I would like my country back. I used to believe that one man could never destroy this country. Not so sure anymore!
