Teen feared dead in watery escape
Fire crews searched the Green River in Tukwila Thursday but found no sign of a 17-year-old suspected car thief who escaped police and jumped into the water Wednesday afternoon.
Crews plan to resume the search this morning. Officials said they don't expect to find the teenager alive but that they won't give up until they find him.
"It's a sad turn of events," Tukwila Fire Battalion Chief Martin Grisham said.
The teenager was seen driving a stolen Toyota Camry near Southcenter mall at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Tukwila police followed the car into a restaurant parking lot on West Valley Highway, where the driver and two passengers jumped out and ran, Tukwila police spokesman Gerry Myklebust said.
Police caught two of the teenagers at a nearby 7-Eleven, but the driver ran and hid in some bushes. A restaurant worker saw him jump into the Green River just north of the Strander Boulevard bridge. Police saw him bobbing in the water before his head went under. Then he disappeared.
The water temperature — about 50 degrees this time of year — and the swift current would make it difficult for even a good swimmer to survive, Grisham said.
The teen hasn't returned home or contacted family or friends, Myklebust said. Police have not released his name, but they said he lives in the area.
The search has been concentrated near the river bend where the teenager was last seen. Police say that is the most likely place to find him.I'm your huckleberry...

He was innocent. If he was guilty he would have floated.
