Crown Vic prepares to give up its scepter

    http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/01/c...p-its-scepter/

According to Ford sources who gossiped to Ward's Auto, the Ford Crown Victoria won't be available on retail lots after 2008. From 2009, the only folks who can buy one are police and taxi drivers. Even that frontier is being threatened, with police departments snapping up Dodge Chargers and Chevy Impalas. New York's taxi fleet has to go hybrid by 2012, and Ford is pushing the Escape Hybrid to replace 2,500 Vics on Big Apple streets.
If you've got to have a full-sized rear-driver from the Blue Oval, the Mercury Grand Marquis will still be available. The Marquis is apparently much more popular with the public than the Vic, with nearly 38,280 Marquis' sold by dealers in the first nine months of this year. Compare that to the Crown Victoria, which moved 3,000 Vics to retail buyers in all of 2006. I guess this means we'll have to start looking out for Charger headlights in our rearview mirrors at night...

That Charger is a mean ass machine.

Too bad it's tough to get in and out of.

I wonder what Ford will offer in it's place for LE? Hybrids are out, but I wonder if they will make a push towards their Expedition, or the Taurus (Ford 500).

I've been hearing Ford will discontinue the Crown Vic for oh, 5 years now.

    Nod.

In fairness, the article only said they were scrapping it for civilian sales.

I'd heard from one of the troopers that MSP looked at Chargers, but the trunk space was too small for all the crap they are required to carry.

I have no idea what they'd go with if CVPI's somehow dried up. It's just been so ingrained in my head to see them predominantly driving Fords. My guess would be they'd start going more to Impala's and Tahoes if they couldn't get the Charger situation figured out.

I read an article yesterday (possibly in a recent Newsweek?) that said the CV was being phased out all together. First, the civilian models will go, then the CVPI shortly after.

Same. The one I saw said they were going to dump "Low profit fleet sales".

Im sorry I may be a dinosaur, but I still love the old 440 Dodge Polara. I've chased perps on streets Motorcycles over levees and out in the sand. It blew their minds when I caught them on their own turf.

Never mind, we've been told we've got to go to diesel engine vehicles.

Our next car is a 535 BMW(Turbo diesel) just delivered and waiting to be kitted out.

It's performance is said to match a petrol vehicle, we shall see!

Hasn't the Crown Vic grown a little long in the tooth?

I've driven both the CV and my Mitsu Galant 6-cyl on an obstacle course - in my impression and on, paper, my Galant beats the Crown Vic by a small margin in acceleration, and in my drive, stomps it in the ground on maneuverability - But that may be because I'm just not used to driving a heavier car.

Not sure about the top speed, but I've accidentally shot up to 95MPH passing vehicles, with no signs of instability.

The Galant, as long as you feed it premium gas, seems to also beat the Crown Vic on passing acceleration, but I've been in 2 cars that did much better: The GTO, and the Supercharged 8-cyl Impalla (not the wimpy non-supercharged 6-cyl model that PD's buy).

I think a major magazine like Road & Track should test police vehicle packages against possible civilian contenders for acceleration, maneuverability, crash safety, and durability, to see if they're really better than civilian cars - I think the results will be dissapointing for the older police packages compared to modern civilian cars, mostly because of the weight and RWD.

Any comments on that, and just putting decals and brackets on civilian hot-rods like the GTO??

I want a Dodge Challenger. If I am gonna have no trunk space, etc I might as well have a scary fast, cool looking ride.

Scary fast, and cool looking are something a CVPI is not.
