More fun than an overturned truckload of monkeys
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A Pennsylvania-based specialty trucking company recovered 53 lab monkeys from a trailer that crashed on an Interstate 71 exit ramp in Belmont County.
The truck crashed after 7:30 p.m. Thursday when it rear-ended a minivan and tumbled over the hill by the exit ramp, NewsChannel5 partner ONN reported.
The driver of the truck was not hurt, but the driver of the van was taken to an area hospital.
Because the monkeys are lab animals, local officials were initially concerned about whether the animals posed a public safety concern, however there has been no warning issued by Belmont County authorities or the State Highway Patrol.
The monkeys had recently been flown into the United States and were being taken to a laboratory in Maryland.
Zookeepers from the Oglebay Good Zoo in nearby Wheeling, W.Va. were called to the scene to assist police in dealing with the live animals.
The zookeepers said they were prepared to don hazardous materials suits to collect the monkeys and transport them to the zoo."Like" us on facebook! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Offic...93147194083228
