DETROIT -- It's a distinction Detroit would probably rather not have.
The Motor City has been declared the nation's most dangerous city.
The ranking by a private research group is based on annual FBI crime statistics. Detroit was pegged the nation's murder capital in the 1980s.
Last year's crime leader, St. Louis, fell to number 2. Flint, Michigan, ranked third, followed by Oakland, California. Camden, New Jersey, rounded out the Top 5.
Mission Viejo, California, was ranked the safest U.S. city, followed by Clarkstown, New York.
The 14th annual "City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America" was published by CQ Press, a unit of Congressional Quarterly Incorporated.
The study has drawn harsh criticism from the American Society of Criminology. It calls it "an irresponsible misuse" of crime data.
