SAN DIEGO -- A 38-year-old woman is dead after a horrific rollover accident in North County that closed a freeway for several hours.

The crash occurred on Tuesday night at about 9:15 p.m. on state Route 78 in Vista near Sycamore Avenue and involved multiple vehicles. A Ford Aerostar minivan collided with another car in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, according to investigators with the California Highway Patrol.

The woman driving the minivan was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected into the westbound lanes, officials said. She was run over by several vehicles, including a patrol car driven by a deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The woman died at the scene.

A 6-year-old boy riding in the minivan suffered major injuries and was taken to Children's Hospital by air ambulance, according to authorities. Officials said a second child was brought to Tri-City Hospital.

SR-78 was closed for several hours while officials completed their investigation and workers cleaned up the scene.
