North Carolina Sheriff's Deputy in critical condition after being shot by 60 year old woman
MORGANTON, N.C. (AP) - A Burke County sheriff's deputy is in critical condition after being shot in the neck while authorities tried to serve commitment papers on a 60-year-old woman.
After a 12-hour standoff, police arrested Joyce Henson early Wednesday at her mobile home near Morganton. She was taken to a mental hospital for evaluation.Authorities said Henson shot 31-year-old Deputy Martin Lawing shortly after the standoff began Tuesday night. He was trying to toss a phone through a window.
Lawing was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
Authorities said Henson refused to cooperate when deputies arrived at her house and threatened to shoot anyone who approached the door.
She continued shooting at officers until they shut off her electricity and fired 50 canisters of tear gas into her trailer
*Another example of why you cannot underestimate a person regardless of age.*

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Give it time. A group of ACLU types will bemoan the fact it took 50 cans of gas to get her out of the trailer.
Never mind the officer is seriously injured.

What gets me is they kept touting "60 years old" like she was harmless. Obviously she wasn't, and I know very few 60 year olds who are decrepit or incapable of kicking ass.
