Officer beat with tire iron...suspect shot...

Greene County deputies search the scene for evidence following the shooting of a suspect by the injured officer.

    YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio --

Greene County sheriff's deputies said a police officer from the village of Yellow Springs was forced to pull out his service weapon and fire at a man that attacked him with a metal rod or tire iron. The incident happened right around midnight after the officer responded to a call for help that reportedly involved a person with an emotional problem.

Investigators say the deputy walked into a home on Omar Circle and a man almost immediately came toward him with a tire iron or metal rod in his hands. They say he began swinging that weapon at the officer who then backed out of the home. The man followed him outside and continued swinging and hitting the officer. Sheriff's deputies say that's when the officer drew his gun and shot the man to stop the attack.

Investigators say at least one and possibly two bullets hit the attacker in the leg. Paramedics took him to Greene Memorial Hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Yellow Springs officer went to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for a number of welts and bruises inflicted by the tire iron.

The Criminal Investigation Section of the Greene County Sheriff's Office is now handling the case. They say the man involved in this incident does have a history with the Yellow Springs Police Department but they're still gathering details about that background.
    FIGHT ON!

    A Smile

A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.

It enriches those who receive it,
without making poorer those who give.
It takes but a moment, but the memory
    of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he
    can get along without it,
and none is so poor but that
he can be made rich by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home,
    fosters goodwill in business,
and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary,
cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,
and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,
or stolen, for it is something that is of no
value to anyone until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile
so much as he who has no more to give.
