Ontario chief solves theft of his car

ONTARIO - Police Chief Jim Doyle proved early last Saturday that law and justice are never off-duty in his neighborhood. At about 4:55 a.m,, Doyle awoke to the sound of honking outside of his residence, which he dismissed, at first, as his neighbors going to work.
Then, Doyle and his wife distinctly heard thumping.
"I went down to investigate and heard noise indicating someone was in my car," he said Wednesday when asked about the incident.
"So, I went back upstairs, armed myself, came back down and looked over the wall."
Doyle saw the passenger side window of his car was smashed in and somebody behind the driver's seat.
"I told him to get out of the car, and he took off running," Doyle recalled. "And I jumped the wall and chased after him for about 3 1/2 to 4 blocks."
When the man emerged from some bushes, the chief caught and detained the 17-year-old male from Ontario until deputies arrived.
Doyle - who admits he must have been a sight running in his pajamas through the neighborhood - said an instinct from decades in law enforcement probably kicked in with that early morning surprise.
"I think it's always there," he said. "It's just not taken out as much the older you get ... I didn't really feel bad until after that. When you get old, your body starts to hurt...
"But I wasn't going to let him get away."
Mayor Paul Leon, who hadn't heard about the incident, said Wednesday he wasn't surprised Doyle was quiet about an adventure that anyone else would brag about. "He isn't his own horn blower. I'll bet to him he was just doing his job," Leon said. Well I know he wasn't sleeping on the job quipped Leon. "We have always called him "night ranger" his pajamas probably had an "S" on his chest. This story is incredible, not only in that a Police Chief actually got out and chased a thug down, but that this rocket scientist was actually stupid enough to try to steal the Chief of Police's car...

CB.....I've got video of my Sheriff chasing some thugs down a Seattle street during WTO in 2000 while a bunch of SPD cops looked the other way. Some of the old guys can still do it if they have to.
