Man killed by police 'had swords'
A charity worker who was shot dead by armed police was carrying three African swords, an inquest has heard.
Simon Murden, 26, from Beverley, was shot six times as he walked along the A63 near Hull on 22 March 2005.
Police were called by Mr Murden's father, who was worried his son may have been suffering from a "psychotic incident", the hearing in Hull heard.
They responded to reports Mr Murden had been driving the wrong way on the dual carriageway and crashed his van.
He was hit with two baton rounds before police opened fire with live ammunition.
The Murden family want the officers involved in the shooting to be prosecuted over the death.
Neil Cameron, counsel for the inquest said, after smashing up his bedroom at the family home, Mr Murden drove off in a blue Ford Transit van eventually ending up on the A63 where he collided with another vehicle.
Mr Cameron said witnesses and a police officer in the area reported Mr Murden was "carrying something that may be a weapon and, in particular, may be a firearm".
Moments later two officers, armed with a carbine and pistol arrive at the scene.
Mr Murden was fatally wounded after baton rounds failed to stop him approaching officers.
The charity worker is the first person to be killed by Humberside Police in an armed operation.
So the family want someone prosecuted after they called police.
Less than lethal options failed to stop him possibly due to his mental health state at the time what else are the police supposed to do"all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" Edmund Burke.
