Woman Charged In Bus Crash
Immigration Officials Help Identify Suspect
POSTED: 9:15 am PST February 22, 2008
UPDATED: 11:43 am PST February 22, 2008
Authorities charged a Minnesota woman with four counts of vehicular homicide in a school bus crash that killed four children.
Police said a 23-year-old known as Alianiss N. Morales was driving a van that failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a bus carrying 28 students. The van struck the bus, which rolled over onto a pickup truck, police said.
The accident happened near the small town of Cottonwood in southwestern Minnesota.
Lyon County Attorney Richard Maes said Morales was also charged Friday with a stop sign violation and driving without a valid license.
The driver of the truck told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that he saw the van run the stop sign.
"I saw the maroon van run a stop sign, it blew over the railroad tracks and hit the bus, sending it sliding into me," James M. Hancock, 45, of Marshall, told the newspaper from his hospital bed in Sioux Falls, S.D. "The next thing I knew, they were hauling kids out and it was chaos."
Authorities also said Morales is not the woman's real name. Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Mark Peterson said authorities had asked immigration officials to help them identify the woman in custody.Molly Weasley makes Chuck Norris eat his vegetables.
