    Manhunt

Suspect named in assaults on women

Authorities searching for El Cajon man

An intensive manhunt was on yesterday for a 33-year-old El Cajon man the San Diego County Sheriff's Department suspects attacked at least two women since Thursday.

The suspect, Jason Washington, also may be connected to an attack on a woman in Solana Beach that occurred late Saturday night. The woman was assaulted as she walked across her apartment complex on Stevens Avenue near Nardo Avenue. She was able to break away and call for help.

The Sheriff's Department said the woman's description of her attacker matched Washington, who they said has no known criminal record.

Although investigators have not yet linked Washington to that attack, they said evidence has connected him to two previous attacks – the rape of a woman at gunpoint on Seabright Lane in Solana Beach on Thursday night, and an attempted assault and abduction of a 15-year-old girl on Fury Lane in unincorporated La Mesa on Saturday morning.

Sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust declined to specify what evidence connected Washington to the attacks.

Investigators served a search warrant on Washington's home in El Cajon yesterday morning. He was not home, but investigators found what they characterized as a “goodbye letter” from Washington, Brust said at an afternoon news conference.

Brust declined to disclose the contents but said Washington poses a risk to himself and a danger to the public. Brust urged Washington to turn himself in. He asked the public to keep an eye out for Washington and to contact authorities rather than trying to stop him.

“The crimes he has perpetrated are brazen,” Brust said. “We consider him extremely dangerous and armed.”

Washington is black, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 208 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a shaved head. He also may have a thin mustache.

Brust said Washington is believed to be driving a white Honda sport utility vehicle with California license plate number 4KYE043.

San Diego Superior Court records show a Jason Luis Washington filed for divorce in May 2006.

Washington's home is a yellow, one-story house in El Cajon. A real estate sign was out front yesterday, along with a silver BMW that a neighbor said was Washington's.

Neighbor Diana Miller, 27, said that she didn't know Washington's occupation but that he appeared to be a well-dressed businessman and “never seemed weird.” He had lived in his house for about two years and usually kept to himself, Miller said.

“I never knew his first name,” Miller said. “He was nice. . . . We just never had a conversation.”

Miller said Washington has a white sport utility vehicle and a silver BMW. Miller said Washington has a daughter in her early teens who seemed to spend about half her time at the home. Miller said she hadn't met the girl's mother.

Miller had last seen Washington on Thursday or Friday as she was going into her home and he was leaving. She said she noticed a light on in the home from about 10 p.m. to midnight Saturday night. About 3 a.m. yesterday morning, Miller said, she heard rustling outside. She said authorities stormed the house about 4 a.m., some dressed in camouflage.

“He seemed like he had too much going for him,” Miller said. “Never in a million years would you think a SWAT team was coming to that house.”

The geographic span of last week's attacks – from the north coast to east inland – is unusual, Brust said.

Earlier this month, a Rancho Peñasquitos man was convicted of sexually assaulting two college students in University City in separate incidents in 2005 and 2006. He faces life in prison.

In January, an Oceanside man pleaded guilty to raping two women in 2007, one in Hillcrest and one in University Heights. He will serve a sentence of 50 years to life.

In 2007, 194 rapes were reported to the Sheriff's Department, and 177 were reported to San Diego city police.

In the attempted rape Saturday night in Solana Beach, which has not been linked to Washington, a 19-year-old woman was walking through an apartment complex about 9 p.m., authorities said.

A man grabbed her, but she fought back and screamed. The suspect cut her with some kind of an object before fleeing. The woman was able to run to her apartment and call for help, and suffered minor injuries.

    update - manhunt over

Body in SUV believed to be that of rape suspect

EL CAJON – A body believed to be that of a man wanted in connection with the rape of a Solana Beach woman and the attempted rape of a 15-year-girl in Rancho San Diego was found Tuesday in the man's vehicle.

The body was discovered just after 9 a.m. by sheriff's deputies after an El Cajon police sergeant noticed the SUV parked on Naranca Avenue near Third Street about an hour earlier, said sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust. The body was in the front driver's seat of the white 2000 Honda CR-V slumped to the right, Brust said. A handgun was found inside.

The body has not yet been identified but based on its appearance and clothing, investigators believe it is that of Jason Washington, the 33-year-old El Cajon man wanted in connection with the assaults.

Officials do not know how long the vehicle had been there or how long the man had been dead, but Brust said the body was cold to the touch.

The SUV was parked right next to Decker's Auto Service and Repair, across the street from homes and apartment complexes.

The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death and positively identify the body, Brust said.
On Monday, an arrest warrant on two charges of kidnapping to commit rape was issued for Washington, a former Marine who worked as a computer technician. Bail was set at $5 million.

He was wanted in the Thursday night attack of a 23-year-old Solana Beach woman who was grabbed from behind while walking on Seabright Lane and raped at gunpoint in a nearby driveway.

He also was suspected in the attempted assault of a girl jogging along Fury Lane in Rancho San Diego Saturday morning. The girl was able to fight off her attacker and helped identify him.

A third attempted rape was reported by a 19-year-old woman in Solana Beach Saturday night. That attack has not been linked to Washington.

Deputies conducted an extensive manhunt for Washington and considered him suicidal and armed and dangerous after the brazen attacks.

“We're relieved, our investigators are relieved and hopefully the public is relieved as well,” Burst said.

Brust said Washington, who has no criminal history, recently resigned from his job. A search of Washington's El Cajon home turned up what authorities described as a “goodbye letter.”
