6:39 a.m. February 25, 2008
VISTA: A deputy was pinned inside his patrol car after a pickup he chased into a cul-de-sac rammed the car and got away, deputies said.
The deputy stopped the driver of a Dodge pickup on Monte Vista Drive near Lindy Lane about 3:10 a.m. because the truck had an obscured license plate, deputies said. As the deputy spoke with the driver outside the truck, one of the two passengers in the pickup moved into the driver's seat and sped away, deputies said.
The deputy got into his car and chased the pickup, which had a man and woman inside.
The driver of the truck went into a cul-de-sac, drove around and struck the right front corner of the deputy's car, causing the patrol car's air bags to deploy, deputies said. The driver then backed up and rammed the patrol car on the left door, pinning the deputy inside, deputies said.
The pair jumped from the truck and ran.
Other officers searched the area but were unable to find them. The driver who had been stopped by the deputy before the assault was not arrested.
Officials said the deputy was taken to a hospital and later released.
