The driver of a convertible that was reported stolen was killed Monday night in a two-vehicle car crash on Mission Street SE, police said.

Eric Monroe, 21, of Keizer died in the fiery crash on Mission Street at the Interstate 5 overpass, said Salem police Lt. Steve Birr.

The crash occurred about 11:52 p.m. when Monroe lost control of a 1989 Ford Mustang convertible, which had been reported stolen about 20 minutes earlier from the 1700 block of Park Avenue NE, Birr said.

Monroe, who was driving east, crossed over the centerline into the westbound lane and slid sideways into a 1999 Dodge Stratus.

Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Stratus, Jennifer Yarbrough, 32, of Salem was taken to Salem Hospital with injuries. She later was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, Birr said.

Witnesses estimated that Monroe was driving nearly 100 mph before the crash occurred, Birr said.

Probably a good thing she was intoxicated at the time of crash, it always seems like the drunks walk away and the sober die
