K-9 officer charged with animal cruelty

A Miami K-9 officer has been charged with starving his K-9 partner to death in a November 2007 case in which investigators found the deceased animal's body to be half its normal weight, according to the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office.

Rondal Lardy Brown, 49, of Miami, was charged with cruelty to animals and offenses against police dogs, both felonies, after investigators discovered the dog's weight had dropped from a normal 66 pounds to 33 pounds and that a wound on the dog's front paw was so severe it showed tendon and bone, according to investigators. Brown, who turned himself in to police on Monday, has been suspended with pay, his attorney Bill Matthewman said.

Brown denied the accusations through his attorney.

"The allegations are ridiculous. They are utter nonsense," Matthewman said. "Officer Brown is a 20-year veteran city of Miami police officer. He has a stellar record and no disciplinary problems in 20 years. He refutes [the allegations]. He loved this dog."

According to the State Attorney's Office, Brown "intentionally failed to provide his police department search dog, Dynasty, with the daily care it needed to sustain its life resulting in the dog's death from malnutrition." The dog had been donated to the Miami Police Department in 2004 by the Jimmy Ryce Foundation.

"It's all time, one of the most tragic cases," said Miami-Dade County State Attorney Kathy Rundle. "The tragedy is magnified by the fact the individual who is charged is a police officer who is the dog's master."

Brown, a trainer for the city of Miami Police K-9 classes and a dog handler, told investigators the dog had gotten out the night before her death, had been playing in a nearby construction site and had possibly eaten rat poison, causing her death.

Two veterinarians who examined the dog's corpse said the dog did not die on Nov. 30, 2007, the day its death was reported, nor did it die the night before.

The doctors also said, based on the condition of the body, that the dog could not have been "running around" the night before its death, as stated by Brown.

"It's very sad," said Ed Griffith, a spokesman for the Miami State Attorney's Office.

Doctors who examined the dog's emaciated body said it would have taken at least a month for the dog to reach its poor physical condition. The dog's heart, liver and brain were sent to the University of Florida's Veterinary Medical Center where a board-certified pathologist examined them. No evidence of cancer or any other chronic disease was found, the report said.

Matthewman said Brown has been on light duty since 2000, and now has an artificial heart valve and pacemaker.

What are you saying? I dont see a verified tag above your name. What gives you the right to even add a comment bashing any LEO.

Some of the best handlers around here are in there late 40's, early 50's.
Id rather have a 49 year old working a dog, then a 25 year old, that will fuck the whole unit up with one stupid decision.

I find it difficult someone with this much experience who is a trainer for the unit, could accidentally let a dog get into this condition.

It may be hard to believe but 49 year olds can maintain the physical conditioning to be on the street kicking butt. In fact, older officers are often more preferable in specialized units with high liability because of their maturity, and legal experience in the profession. Twenty one year old hot shots are barely mature enough to give a gun and send on patrol let alone operate in high liability units like K9 and SWAT.

    .

Its a damn shame that the K9 Handler cannot be honest with himself, and the public about the deceased K9.
If he could no longer take care of the dog, then tell them that. Dont fucking lie about what is obvious.

    Ultimatly, its a damn shame.

    Poor pup

Whatever or whoever is responsible for the canine's condition doesn't change the fact that he suffered a long and painful death. RIP. That being said, I hope the full facts come out and justice is done.

Maybe I'm missing something. Brown is a canine handler and trainer, but he's been on light-duty since 2000? Seven years on the road is about all we get out a canine here, from years 3-10. Was he assigned a fresh dog while on light-duty? Or was this dog near the end of her run, having been with him since 2000 or before? Dogs can waste away very quickly.
I'm just sayin', ignoring the dog's health 'til it died may not have taken as long as this article would imply.

Woah, relax guys. Trust me, if anybody sticks up for LEO's it's me. I was just surprised to hear of a 49 year old K9 Officer, that's all. I never meant to offend anybody and if I did I'm sorry.
