Ohio Trooper arrests off-duty D.C. Police Officer for DUI only 5 days before he was set to retire

A Belmont County trooper made a routine traffic stop and it turned into some intense moments with the driver, who happened to be another officer of the law.
Investigators say Trooper Ross Thompson pulled over off-duty Washington, D.C. police officer Michael Fultz on Interstate 70 in St. Clairsville for driving under the influence Sunday afternoon.
While trying to cuff him, Thompson said Fultz took a swing at him.
Thompson was able to subdue Fultz and Fultz was taken to the Belmont County Jail.
Fultz was released on bond.
WTOV has learned that Fultz was just five days away from retiring.

Professional courtesy only goes so far. Dumbass shouldn't have drank and drive.

He absolutely crossed the line no doubt but he clocked him while he was beiing cuffed(?) It appears he was getting locked up by the trooper whether he was Mr. Nice Guy or not....

Well, as guys don't typically go from nice to swinging in less than a second, even when drunk, he was most likely being a dick beforehand. One "You can't ticket me, I'm a cop!" and he would have pissed any chance at courtesy right down the drain.

I am not defending the guy. Someone puts their hands on me and it is F- them, too bad, so sad.

Besides its common knowledge that troopers everywhere always extend PC to cops who are sober/respectful and polite.

I won't defend the DUI--the rumor mill has his BAC as off the chart. And if he was driving with that BAC, heading east, it leads me to believe he was heading home to Virginia (I can only imagine what it would have been if he had made it there-scary). He obviously has a serious problem since he was picked up in Maryland for the same thing several months ago, after a minor wreck, and supposedly received probation for it (I guess that's out the window!). He was completely compliant. The swing at this trooper, though? I just can't see it. I do know that he has a good amount of hearing loss in one ear. If you speak to him on the bad side he has a tendency to suddenly turn his head in an effort to hear you with his better ear. I can't help but wonder if the trooper, not knowing this, took this quick turn action to be threatening. I can't say I wouldn't have thought the same thing, but this is one of the last guys I'd pick to fight with another officer. As has been said, he was on the verge of retirement. Sad story. Hope he gets real help.

I'm sure we're not getting the whole story. If the driver went from zero to Dick, he got what he deserved. I'll reserve judgement one way or the other.
