Iowa University to pay up to $600 for students to smoke there pot, to study its affects on brain function and cognition
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A group of University of Iowa scientists is looking for marijuana smokers to help gain insight into the drug's effects. And they plan to pay subjects as much as $600 to smoke their pot.
The study examines how marijuana affects brain function and cognition, with particular attention to the duration of use and the age of first use. The measure is brain imaging studies and achievement tests, such as for math and verbal skills.
Robert Block is an associate professor in the school's Department of Anesthesia and the lead investigator on the project. He says the group is looking for pot users and control subjects who consume alcohol and tobacco - but not marijuana - to participate in the study.
Subjects receive $20 for an initial screening session. Those that participate fully pocket $600.
Block said that, depending on the results, the study might ultimately be used to support political positions on marijuana. Those could include whether there should be harsher criminal penalties, whether it should be decriminalized, or whether it should be allowed for medicinal purposes.

Wonder what they are going to do about the liability. What if one of the test subjects does something stupid like drive and wreck and says "Dooood, it's not my fault, they paid me to smoke the ganja and turned me loose."

If this isnt supported by a government grant or something wouldnt it still be illegal??? Coudnt the professor and the University be charged with distributing??

It's probably worded that they will get paid for coming in for the study of the effects of it, but will have to sneak off to the bathroom (or whereever) to actually light it up. The only thing the subjects would have to do is show up, take some tests, then show up stoned later with the time and amount of how much they smoked, and repeat the tests.

I'm guessing it's a grant. Most of the testing they do is via grant. And if it's not, this might explain why the tuition keeps going up!

They probably get an legal exemption from the government in advance, and keep the students in the lab until after the effects have worn off.

They probably know from previous studies how long it takes to wear off, and are just studying the more subtle effects during the time it takes to wear off. If they find during the course of the study that it takes longer to wear off than previously assumed (for instance if one of the LEOs here arrests one of the kids in the study for DUI Originally Posted by Terminator
