3-year-old hospitalized after drinking 'date rape drug'

NATIONAL CITY – A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized and her mother and a friend were arrested Sunday after the girl drank from a bottle that contained GHB, a substance commonly known as the date rape drug.

Officials with Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista notified police just after 1 p.m. that the girl was suffering from a drug overdose and was gravely ill, said National City police Assistant Chief Manuel Rodriguez.

The girl's mother told police she had been at a friend's house on Wilson Avenue near 20th Street and was smoking drugs when her daughter got thirsty and asked for some water, Rodriguez said.
The friend handed the mother a bottle of clear liquid and she gave it to the girl, who drank it and complained of the taste. A short time later the child began to vomit and lose consciousness, Rodriguez said.

The mother and her friend took the girl to the hospital. The mother was arrested for being under the influence and possession of a controlled substance, Rodriguez said.

Her friend also was arrested later for being under the influence of a controlled substance, he said.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital, where she is expected to survive, Rodriguez said.

GHB is gamma hydroxybutyric acid, a colorless, odorless liquid that is often mixed in alcohol and is popular at dance clubs and at rave parties, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

It is commonly used by predators in sexual assaults because it renders the victim incapable of resisting and can cause them to forget what happened. The drug also comes in a white powder form and is also known by several other names including liquid ecstasy, scoop, goop and grievous bodily harm.

Body builders have also be known to use it for its alleged anabolic effects, according to the DEA.

Rodriguez said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and that Child Protective Services is assisting.
