Police academy drop-out rate hits 50 percent

Police academy drop-out rate hits 50 percent

By JAMES P. QUARANTA Staff Writer May 2, 2008

VINELAND -- Half of the dozen police candidates hired Feb. 29 have decided they don't want to be in law enforcement.

The recruits dropped out of a 21-week police training course at the Gloucester County Police Academy in March. Seven new police candidates were sworn in April 21.
"It's unusual to have that many drop out," Capt. Paul Letizia said.
Letizia said it is not uncommon for some new hires to drop out of police academy training.
"But 50 percent is rare," he said.
During their initial training, recruits participate in vigorous physical training and are subject to strict discipline while maintaining high academic requirements.
"Police work is a life's calling," Letizia said. "It's a personal choice that may not be right for everyone. Some people realize that when they begin training."
According to statistics from the state Attorney General's Office, between 2000 and 2008 there were 25,649 men and women enrolled in police academy training throughout the state. During that time, 2,113 withdrew from the various academies.
Sgt. Vince Solazzo is a training officer at the Vineland Police Academy. He said the physical, mental and academic demands on law enforcement candidates can be stressful for some.
"It is a very structured and demanding course of study," Solazzo said. "If you're not in shape, you may have a problem. The purpose of this intense training is to make sure we get the best possible people for the job."

This will continue until they change how they hire cops.

See the recent article on the front page, for example.
