CHP Officer Shoots, Kills Woman During Traffic Stop
Officials: Woman Pulled Out Replica Handgun
POSTED: 6:33 am PDT June 11, 2008
UPDATED: 6:41 am PDT June 11, 2008
ALHAMBRA, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a woman during an Alhambra traffic stop after she pulled what turned out to be a replica handgun.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Aura Sierra said the shooting just off Interstate 10 east of downtown Los Angeles occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Sheriff's investigators remained at the scene Wednesday morning at Hellman and Garfield avenues.
A local television station reported that the CHP officer spotted the woman's red BMW speeding on the freeway and made a traffic stop just off the interstate.
Investigators said the woman pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and the CHP officer, fearing for his life, shot her.
Sierra said the woman was declared dead at a nearby hospital.

No doubt - I remember a story of a robbery around here with a realistic-looking pellet gun. Some of the idiot's family were expecting the officer to determine bore size and internal mechanics of the gun in a fraction of a second, from 20 feet away.
I guess the big mistake the officer made was that he left his telescopic X-Ray vision equipment at home that day.

Anyone have any numbers/data on how often this has happened?
I came close to killing a kid one time because of an Airsoft replica... He owes some anonymous guy who told me BEFORE I approached the kid that he had a BB gun a lot of thanks... Like a lifetime's worth. 'Cause that's the only reason the kid wasn't staring down my Glock's barrel...Voting against incumbents until we get a Congress that does its job.

I know this happens all over the place but it seems that Los Angeles is full of these suicidal idiot morons. They seem to be crawling out of the woodwork there. People wonder why I can't stand Los Angeles. Here's your sign.

Same here. It was a Beretta replica sticking out from under the front seat. When I directed them to put their hands up they said "Oh it's ok" as they reached for it. I think my real gun made them poop themselves and forget all about the replica gun. The barrel looking like a cannon as it was thrust towards the drivers face certainly made them think twice!

A highly unfortunate circumstance that will raise issues for the lady's family and the officer's conscience.
Hopefully, the investigation into the cause of her actions will sate the families of both sides and the officer will suffer no lasting effects from doing what was necessary to avert a percieved threat to his or his partner's safety.
The officer did what was necessary at the time and is not being castigated in the local media for his actions.Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.
