LEMON GROVE – Sheriff's officials are looking for a suspected drunken driver who walked away from a hospital after he crashed his sport utility vehicle into two homes and hit a vehicle at a third late Thursday night.
No one inside the homes was injured.

Authorities said Rahin Mitchell, 32, was behind the wheel of a SUV that caused a trail of destruction so extensive that one of the homes hit along Massachusetts Avenue had to be condemned.

Mitchell, who was on probation for two prior DUI arrests, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. But he left a hospital where he was taken for treatment of possible internal injuries. Sheriff's officials said they will track him down and charge him with felony DUI.

His passenger, a woman, was taken to the hospital with complaints of back pain. Sheriff's officials said neither her injuries nor Mitchell's were life-threatening.

The SUV crashed into the homes on Massachusetts Avenue near San Altos Place around 11:45 p.m.

Authorities said the SUV Mitchell was driving struck the first home, then became airborne. It went over a small pickup parked in the driveway of a second home before striking a second vehicle in the same driveway.

The SUV then continued through the garage of the house and took out part of the kitchen before coming to a stop after hitting a vehicle in the driveway of a third home, officials said.
Reina Mejia, 27, lived in the second house that was hit, which was condemned due to the damage.

Mejia, her husband and four children, ages 2 to 16, were asleep in bed when the SUV crashed through their garage.

“We just hear a big noise, and the first thing I get is my baby,” she said.

Standing in front of her home Friday, she said she was just relieved everyone was safe.

“I just thank you to God my kids are OK,” she said.

We've had a couple vehicle into house type accidents this week - but yeah - this one is a doozy!

It's amazing the two in the vehicle survived at all.

It is a good American built full size SUV. That is probably what saved them.
