Teen killed, mom injured in Descanso shooting

DESCANSO – An 18-year-old man was killed and his mother injured when the woman's estranged husband, saying he was defending his life and property early Saturday, fired two shotgun blasts from inside his home at what he thought were burglars.

According to the Sheriff's Department, about 2 a.m. Gary Sanner of Oak Grove Drive in Descanso called 911 and said someone was breaking into his house. A short time later, a dispatcher heard gunshots.

Eighteen minutes later, deputies arrived and found Joe Eric Burton II, 18, dead from a gunshot wound outside a rear window of Sanner's house.

Homicide Lt. Dennis Brugos said that Sanner's estranged wife, Jennifer Sanner, left messages on his telephone Friday, requesting property from the house. However, Sanner and his wife never spoke directly.

About 2 a.m., Sanner woke up when he heard his dogs barking and vehicles driving onto his property. He then heard people outside his house.

He called 911 and then, after hearing someone trying to get in his home through a window, he fired a shotgun in that direction. He then fired a second time at another window, where someone was shining a flashlight.

Joe Burton II was killed and Jennifer Sanner was wounded, but is expected to survive. They were two of five people who went to the Sanner house; the others were identified as Joe Burton, father of the fatally shot 18-year-old and identified as Jennifer Sanner's boyfriend; a 16-year-old son of Jennifer Sanner; and a 20-year-old daughter of Burton.

As of Saturday night no arrests had been made. Brugos said the case is being investigated by the crime lab and homicide detail. It will be up to the District Attorney's Office to decide who, if anyone, should be charged, he said.

Crazy. But why the hell would they show up at 2am to get their belongings? Not exactly a normal time to just drop by somebody's house!

Yeah, really dumb to show up at 2am and try to break in a window.

That could have been a cop or neighbor outside the other window with the flashlight, though. That one is going to be hard to justify unless it was obvious that they were communicating with each other.

Wow! Eighteen minutes till the first Deputy is on scene! How far out in the sticks is this place?

As Pdawg says, its fairly rural. Descanso appears to be a small unincorporated community of about 2200 people approximately 30 to 40 miles east of San Diego near Interstate 8 and CA 79. Its near the Cleveland National Forest so I wouldn't doubt that there might be some of that medical MJ going on down there, PGG. Not too far from the Mexican border, either. Probably about another 30 miles north, according to my research of Mapquest and Wikipedia.

It's a fast response for large city PD's and for most S.O.'s I know of. When I worked for the county it took me upwards of an hour to respond to some calls.

Holy crap! Like I told PDawg in a pm.

If I called 911 to report an active break in, and then the dispatcher heard gunfire, I would have maybe 30 Cops from 3 maybe 4 (If GSP was close) different agencies at my home in less than 5 minutes.

The first one would be on scene in under 2 minutes.

Same here, I know we're not that big, but it's an incredibly fast response. I think they're bored here and just all come running.

If I called 911 where I live and reported a burglary in progress, it could be 25 minutes before I saw a Deputy Sheriff - without factoring in dispatch delay.

Where i lived in the Keys the response time was quite good. It was the County SO and they usually had 2 Deputies per zone, the zones were roughly a 20-30 mile area.
