SAN DIEGO A speeding motorist was arrested in Mountain View early Friday after narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with a police cruiser and hitting two other patrol cars, authorities said.

The police cruiser was heading east on Imperial Avenue just before midnight Thursday when they saw 21-year-old Alfredo Catalan come off the southbound ramp of Interstate 805 and head west on Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego police.

Catalan was going so fast he had to make a wide turn, ended up in the eastbound lanes and almost slammed into the patrol car, according to police.

Officers in that police car made a U-turn and chased the silver Honda west on Imperial and then south on South 37th Street where the driver ran into a parked, unoccupied police car, according to authorities.

Catalan then headed over to Milbrae Street and intentionally side swiped another patrol car driven by an officer who was going to assist in the chase, according to police. That officer was uninjured.

The brief chase finally came to a stop after Catalan crashed into a parked Dodge truck.

Catalan, who was not injured, was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
