Miami-Dade Corrections Corporal leads Hollywood Police on high speed chase
Mar. 4--As he has for decades, Ronald Hill reported Thursday to jail for work.
The Miami-Dade corrections corporal started his afternoon shift at the Metro West Detention Center, where he supervises other officers. At 11 p.m., he clocked out.
What happened next was not routine. A few hours later, the 43-year-old man led police on a wild chase before running over a Hollywood cop with his car and being shot by police.
"We made the arrest and all of a sudden to find out this person was a corrections officer, it was shocking," Hollywood police spokesman Detective Carlos Negron said Friday.
Hill is being charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving and fleeing the scene of an accident. He also was driving with a suspended license.
Just what happened between the end of Hill's shift and the chase with police is unknown. But Hollywood police say these events led to his arrest:
Two officers pulled over Hill's Ford F-150 at 3:42 a.m. Friday on suspicion of drunk driving. Hill stepped out of the truck, but as a third officer arrived, he jumped back inside.
The F-150 peeled out, running over one officer's foot and dragging another who held onto the door, police said. Fearing for his safety, that officer pulled his gun and shot Hill in the stomach.
Hill drove the wrong way down Sheridan Street, crashed with another cop car on University Drive and eventually ended up in the parking lot of the Miami-Dade police station in Miami Gardens.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound jail officer bolted on foot but was brought down by police dogs. Hill, bloodied from the gunshot wound, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
His jail uniform and belt were in the car.
He's been relieved of duty pending the investigation. When released from the hospital, he'll be booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center.
The injured Hollywood officer was treated and released from Memorial Regional Hospital.
The cop who fired his gun was placed on routine administrative leave.
Hill was hired by corrections in 1984.
His arrest is one in a string of accidents involving Miami-Dade's corrections department. Another jail officer, Hassan Garrison, was arrested last month in connection with a stabbing at a South Beach night club.
Corrections Officer Keir Thomas is also under investigation for last months's alleged beating of an inmate, witnessed by several police officers.
The man was so severely beaten that he was hospitalized.
The department has been under scrutiny in the wake of two high-profile inmate escapes and a sweeping review of practices and procedures by the county police and fire departments.

It is very upsetting to hear stories such as this one. It certainly adds to the bad rap that CO's already have. Not all CO's are terrible people, but it can happen to the best of us, at any point in one's career. It is also unfortunate that officer's were injured during this pursuit. What a way to end your career.
Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?????

This explains soooo much... I had to talk to one of their Sergeants today and he seemed a bit more stressed than usual... and it explains why one of the Captain's made a comment about being constantly in the news and what a damn mess they were...
