DALLAS -- About 700 employees were evacuated from the Dallas Bulk Mail Center near Interstate 30 Wednesday morning after an employee found a package he said was emitting a strange odor and "hissing."

The package turned out to be a box of rocks.




Postal inspectors and Dallas Fire Department investigators were called to the bulk mail center near I-30 and Westmoreland Road at about 7:30 a.m. after the employee complained of a burning sensation in his throat.


Two employees were evaluated at the scene, Dallas Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sherrie Lopez said.

I would assume there was sand or small rock fragments within the box of rocks and when the box is tilted on its side or even upside down(especially if the box says fragile), the sand or fragments sifted to the bottom making a hissing sound.
