Texas Roads to Get More Colorful Starting August 1
New Specialty License Plate Partnership Gives Drivers Many Options
AUSTIN (July 30, 2008) – Texas roads are about to get more colorful when more than 20 new license plates designs debut Friday, August 1.
Texans can now have a little fun and express themselves on their cars with new plate colors and designs. The new www.myplates.com website lets you create your own plate combination, check its availability and order online. There’s even a way to print out a paper copy of the plate to see how it looks on your car. The website goes live on Friday.
The plates, which can all be personalized, are from My Plates, the Texas-based company chosen by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to handle the design, marketing and sale of new specialty license plates.
This innovative public/private partnership is the fi rst of its kind in the country. It will give Texans more opportunities to express their creativity while also generating new income for the state. A portion of the sale of each plate will go into the General Revenue Fund, which provides services that benefi t all Texans. The contract guarantees a minimum of $40 million to the Fund over a five-year period.

Texas currently has the country’s lowest percentage of drivers with personalized license plates. Fewer than 1% of Texans own them. Before now, Texans had to renew specialty plates each year. With My Plates, you can also choose a fi ve or ten-year option. My Plates will also offer gift certifi cates for its specialty license plates, another unique aspect of the program.
“The price of plates will depend on the style and the level of personalization. Plates are divided into three series: Custom, Premium, and Luxury. Prices start at $95 a year, or from less than $40 a year if you buy a ten-year term.
“With almost 21 million vehicles on Texas roads, there are a lot of stories out there” said James Power, president of My Plates. “We’re offering a fun way to tell those stories and to add character to your car, truck or motorcycle.”
Besides the exciting new designs, the key difference in the new system is the ease of picking a plate, personalizing it and completing the order. My Plates has developed a user-friendly website (www.myplates.com) and has added a professionally staffed call center in Austin to handle orders through their toll-free number, 877-769-7528 (877-7MYPLATES). On the site, you can see all the color and design options, check availability of a letter/number combination and securely complete the transaction using a credit card.

Good Grief, I thought CA had problems with too many different versions of license plates. Personally I like the plates with embossed figures. The flat plates that some states are going to these days look cheap and counterfeit. IMO
That's because most Texans (the ones that I have met) are not vain. Unlike the weirdos in my home state of California. That's why they call them vanity plates.Texas currently has the country’s lowest percentage of drivers with personalized license plates. Fewer than 1% of Texans own them.

Is there a way to put the O/R logo somewhere on the license plate?

I don't mind the Red White and Blue ones that depict the Texas flag but the figures need to be embossed, IMO.

Chuck, you should know better. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ugly about ANYTHING that has "Texas" written on it. NOTHING! No go turn in your Texas DL..you are suspended from calling yourself a Texan for 2 weeks because there are many Texans who, despite trying very very hard (and getting shot down by their hillbilly Okie wives) to return, are not allowed and are stuck in purgatory 126.4 miles north of the Red River for the time being. For those few, I say "Shame on you, Chuck!" Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go ask my neighbor if he can keep the moonshining and washboard playing down. I have to work tomorrow.

They may have Texas written on them but MyPlates is just a damn contractor.
I hear that MyPlates are expanding into Oklahoma next, and will be offering a discount to married cousins

I thought they'd either run someone out of Texas with a pink plate or say "get a rope!"

Here in Delaware we have black and white tags from numbers 1 to 86,999 I think it is. People will pay thousands and thousands of dollars for a low digit tag. A lot of people are really into it, while others think it's a total waste of money. It's basically a social status, with the lower number the better...

This is our current standard plate. I think it looks much better than any of the speciality plates available from MyPlate or TxDOT:

Here's what the new 2009 standard plate will look like - Again a vast improvement over MyPlates and TxDot speciality plates:

These are the TxDOT speciality plates - They look a lot better than MyPlates, but still not any better than the standard plate:

Unfortunately, the only Texas plate I could find to support LE is only available to wounded LEO's and the families of fallen LEO's.
They could have done a better job on it, too.

SC has 102 different plate styles. I'm NOT exaggerating. I just counted the suckers.
They have one for each college, plus several NASCAR, and one for just about every special interest group you could shake a stick at. Plus the ones for motorcycles, for heavy duty vehicles, etc, etc.
