Two New York Police Officers Shot on Subway Platform (Update2)
By Ryan Flinn
Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- New York police said two officers were shot on a subway platform in Queens following a fight.
Officer Shane Farina, 38, who was shot below his sternum, is in a critical though stable condition, while Officer Jason Maass, 28, was shot in the lower back and is stable, said detective Madeline Galindo in a telephone interview. Both were wearing bullet-resistant vests, she said.
The incident occurred at about 5:15 p.m. today. Farina and Maass confronted Raul Nunez, 32, who had entered the F-train's Queens-Bridge station at 21st Street illegally. When they tried to arrest Nunez, he fought them, according to a statement from the New York Police Department.
One of the officers' 9-millimeter Smith & Wesson guns came loose during the struggle and Nunez grabbed it and fired at them, police said in the statement.
Nunez then fled the scene, taking an escalator to the station's upper level, where he was confronted by Lieutenant Gary Abrahall. During a shootout, Nunez fired three times at Abrahall and the officer fired six shots, striking Nunez four times, police said. Nunez was taken to Bellevue Hospital, according to the statement, where he is in a stable condition.

Hope the officers come through relatively fine.
One question, does NYPD not use active retention holsters? How would their gun just "fall out"?"The inherent vice of Capitalism is the unequal sharing of its blessings; the inherent vice of Socialism is the equal sharing of its miseries." -Winston Churchill

They were in plain clothes so they most likely were not wearing their gunbelt with their duty holster. There really is no regulations for offduty holsters so who knows what type he had.
I was not there, but another possibility is he unholstered his weapon when he ordered the perp to stop and upon chasing him he reholstered and the weapon did not lock in.
Either way, thank goodness they will be all right, one is home recovering, the second still in ICU, stable condition after surgery.

Gotcha. By the way, I didn't mean that as the cop made a mistake, I just didn't know if they were required. Here they use everything from level I to level III

I use a Blackhawk Level II Serpa. It seems pretty secure, but I'm sure it would only buy a couple of seconds - It doesn't take a rocket scientist to unlatch it.
I'm glad the officers are recovering!

I agree with you , Darin , 4 out of 6 is damn good when the shit is for real and not on a range. I think armsmaster270 was just hoping for a lethal outcome for the perp in order save the taxpayers some money.

The issue in this case is likely not marksmanship, but the sad ammunition NYPD officers are forced to use in the name of political correctness.
4 out of 6 is good shooting in a gunfight for the average copper.
Lets upgrade NYPD to something that starts with 4 - and buy it in bulk.I'm your huckleberry...

Yes, until recently - one of our NYPD people can tell you when exactly.
