Web site linked to al-Qaida backs McCain--Posting says the network would welcome a pre-election attack on the U.S.
Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.
The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."
SITE Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Maryland, monitors the Web site and translated the message.
"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."
Mark Salter, a senior McCain adviser, said he had heard about the Web site chatter but had no immediate comment.
The message is credited to a frequent and apparently respected contributor named Muhammad Haafid. However, Haafid is not believed to have a direct affiliation with al-Qaida plans or knowledge of its operations, according to SITE.
SITE senior analyst Adam Raisman said this message caught SITE's attention because there has been little other chatter on the forums about the U.S. election.
SITE was struck by the message's detailed analysis — and apparent jubilation — about American financial woes.
"What we try to do is get the pulse of the jihadist community," Raisman said. "And it's about the financial crisis."
Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden issued a videotape just four days before the 2004 U.S. presidential election directly addressing the American people.

Either way we are going to have to fight them. I would rather fight them there then here.

They endorsed Kerry last time - this time they are trying reverse psychology.

What if they're trying reverse reverse psychology? Or reverse reverse reverse psychology? Those terrorists are tricky!

Wait for the "I'm Osama bin Laden and I approve this message" ads.

I disagree with the 'reverse psychology' thesis, in and of, itself.
I think that there is one presidential candidate that they fear... the other, they much prefer.
They call McCain 'impetuous', I read that to mean that they hold a sense of forboding about McCain being in command of the U.S. military.
They wish things to go back to 'business as usual', when they were free to create death, horror, and havok at will, unimpeded.
It is nice to see the 'jihadist community' has taken note of McCain's warrior history.
They reek of fear, this tells me that we have indeed accomplished much.
Those of you who cheered Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama, can now revel in Al-Qaeda's as well...

I don't agree with you completely CB, but I can see where you are coming from. Either way, in the end we both agree that Al Q would like very much to see Obama win.I'm your huckleberry...

OK seriously, I think the minority of members of Al Qaeda who are in it because they (mistakenly) believe that it is the best way to prevent themselves and their fellow fundamentalist Muslims from getting killed would prefer Obama. Most Al Qaeda members, however, are likely to be so radical that they do not fear the death (which to them is glorious martyrdom and the path to paradise) that McCain is more likely bring to them and large numbers of their fellow fundamentalist Muslims worldwide; what they fear are Obama's more conciliatory policies, which might prevent fundamentalist Muslims worldwide from becoming angry enough to join Al Qaeda.
