Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Authorities arrested a man whom bystanders say they hit with a frozen turkey when he carjacked a woman's sedan outside a Fuquay-Varina grocery store Sunday.
The man stole money from a BP gas station at Ten-Ten Road and US. Highway 401 shortly before noon, Garner police said. He then crossed Ten-Ten to the parking lot of a Harris Teeter store and approached Irene Moorman Bailey loading groceries in her car.
Witnesses told police that the man started beating Bailey in the face, trying to get her keys.
The lady was being beaten on the ground. She was lying on the ground and the guy was on top of her physically hitting her, shopper Randy Owens said.
Bystanders intervened and hit the man in the head with a frozen turkey that Bailey bought, police said.
I was just grocery shopping, like any other day, and I happened to come out and I saw all this chaos that just had happened, shopper Leanne Sweet said.
Several people interceded and tried to get him away from her, Owens said.
The man managed to get into Bailey's 2001 Nissan Maxima and hit five other cars while escaping from the parking lot, officers said.
He backed across and he hit the Cadillac and our car, and hit another car that was parked, Owens said.
"My bumper's cracked and the whole side is dented in," Sweet said.
Officers found Fred Ervin, 30, in Bailey's car, Fuquay-Varina police said. Ervin was taken to WakeMed with a serious head wound. He was listed in fair condition Sunday evening.
When Ervin is released, police said he will face these charges: assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery, driving with a revoked license, hit and run and larceny.
"Sad is what it is, especially during the holiday season, Owens said.
The Wake County Sheriff's Office and Garner and Fuquay-Varina police departments responded to the incident. The BP is in Garner town limits, and the Harris Teeter is in Fuquay-Varina.

Reminds me of an episode of WKRP, but that was more of a carpet bombing of the parking lot than a surgical strike

Shopper clubs an alleged carjacker with a frozen turkey as he tried to steal a woman's car in a grocery store parking lot
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Stopped. Cold turkey.
North Carolina authorities say a shopper clubbed an alleged carjacker with a frozen turkey as he tried to steal a woman's car in a grocery store parking lot Sunday.
Police say 30-year-old Fred Louis Ervin of Raleigh stole money from a gas station before running across the street to a Harris Teeter store in a town just south of Raleigh. Garner police say he began beating Irene Moorman Bailey while stealing her car.
Other shoppers came to her rescue, including one who hit Ervin with the turkey. Police did not release the person's name.
Despite serious head injuries, Ervin got away in Bailey's car and hit several other cars as he fled. But police arrested him a short time later.
He faces several charges including assault inflicting serious injury. Ervin was hospitalized Monday in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. He had not yet been assigned a lawyer and was to appear in court Dec. 30.

The station manager thought giving away turkeys would be a good Thanksgiving publicity stunt, so he rented a helicopter and dropped dozens of live turkeys in the parking lot.

I think it was very rude of those people not to serve cranberry sauce with his turkey.
