Flint mother Latrica Ryan of 10 looks to community for help
by RoNeisha Mullen | The Flint Journal Saturday November 29, 2008, 7:00 PM
Melissa Cousineau | The Flint JournalLatrica Ryan (back, center) sits with 9 of her 10 children, who range in age from 2 months to 13 years, at their home in Flint. "It's not as hard as people think," Ryan says of raising so many children. She recieves a lot of help, including transportation and diapers, from services like FACED and from many friends and family. With all the kids, one thing Ryan doesn't have and desperately needs is a washer and dryer.
FLINT, Michigan -- With 10 kids and no vehicle, Latrica Ryan is used to juggling.
Going to a movie or out for dinner is a like plotting a major tactical undertaking. Not that such outings happen that much.
"It would really be nice if I could take my kids where they needed to go, instead of having to find them a ride," Ryan said. "And when we do go somewhere, I have to pay four or five people (for gas) to get us all there.
"I have booster seats and car seats. It's a lot."
Ryan, is a 29-year-old single stay-at-home mother of five sons and five daughters, who range in age from 2 months to 13 years.
Flint Journal extras Help for FACED
Faith Access to Community Economic Development is in need of donations. Listed below are a few of the items needed most:
• Baby items (clothes, diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, infant carriers, pack-N-plays)
• Nonperishable foods (canned goods, canned meats, box foods)
• Personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, tissue, towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes)
• Other (children's clothes, maternity clothes, bus passes, cash donations)
Items can be dropped of at FACED Corporation, 310 E. Third St., Suite 5, Flint.
Transportation isn't the only issue Ryan has to deal with.
The Flint woman said she sometimes needs help providing her children with clothes and food.
"As they get older, it's becoming harder and more expensive to buy them clothes," Ryan said. "I try to keep the older kids looking nice because I don't want them to be teased at school.
"And they don't starve," she said. "But there are times when I start running low on food and I have to call for help."
Ryan may not be able to take her kids on a fancy vacation, but with the help of organizations such as FACED Corporation, she is able to ensure that her kids' basic needs are met.
The Flint-based agency has helped Ryan clothe and feed her children, as well as pay utility bills.
"It started off with diapers and bus passes." Ryan said of her first encounter with FACED 10 years ago. "Now, Retinea (Dye, a maternal and infant health advocate at FACED) will give me a ride to doctors' appointments for my kids. She'll take me to their schools. She's always there when I need her."
FACED is a faith-based community outreach agency that focuses on assisting the low-income. Dye said the agency helps educate mothers on parenting and provides them with things such as maternity clothes, baby clothes, other baby items, counseling and support groups.
Dye said the agency has even helped pay security deposits for housing.
Tough times have brought more people into the agency in search of help.
"We're getting more calls for assistance with utility bills because the price of gas had gone up," Dye said. "We can only (help) so many people, so we're referring them to other agencies."
Dye said FACED has reached its limit of aiding 50 families. The agency is in need of donations to continue assisting families.
"In between (Women, Infant and Children) appointments, moms run out of formula, and they turn to us," Dye said. "Sometimes we have what they need and if we don't, we have to refer them to other agencies."
Even without a car, Ryan manages to stay involved in her children's school life, volunteering and meeting with teachers to check on their progress.
Most of Ryan's 10 children are in school and six are on the honor roll, she said.
"They're good kids," she said.

I am not trying to be disrespectful, but I would truly like to know how did you get to 10 children. Are you a stay at home mom by choice? Why don't you work? Where are/is the father/s?
I truly wish the article would have addressed the above. You are 29 years old, wow.

Not to sound mean but, STOP HAVING SEX!! Did this woman stop for a second to think "how am I going to take care of children" before she had them? If you're rich and you want oodles of kids, go for it. If you're like most of us: STOP SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON YOUR BACK AND SPEND MORE TIME ON YOUR FEET!

I couldn't even finish the whole article. Seriously, I think contraception should be compulsory for people on welfare or receiving public assistance. Can't take care of the three kids you already have and you need our help? Fine, but you don't get to have any more. And I don't mean condoms or the pill. Nope, give them a Depo shot every three months if they want to renew their assistance. Solves two problems...they won't have to hold their legs together (because apparently it's impossible) and we won't have to pay for it.

I dont know how it turned out, but a few years back NC changed its welfare laws a bit. It basically stated that at the time you apply for welfare its based on the number of children you have at that time. If you have another child with-in 9 months then they would consider increasing your benifits, but if you have any other children after 9 months then your amount of benifits would NEVER increase. Basically the state said that the people wont be paying for baby factories that just want more money.
Like I said Im not sure if it still happens that way, but the concept is right on."An Unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." Jeff Cooper

Don't be so harsh on her. Remember, Saint Hillery said it takes a village (read Govt) to raise a child. She needs more then a village, she needs a Metropolis.

Ouch. If you can't afford them, stop breeding! I can understand if she had an "accident" at age 16, but she's 29 now with 10 kids. WTF? I'm glad to see most of the kids are doing well in school, and hope they turn out well. I think the number of kids she has for an unemployed person is ridiculous though.

This is where the left will tell you she's a victim of circumstance. That she somehow didn't make a conscious decision to open her legs.

That's stupidly common here. This chick gets most of her money from charities, and presumably child support from more than half a dozen guys, and is actively begging for more. I have an idea, how about she gets her tubes tied and finds a job.

This is a fraud. Those children aren't hers, they are borrowed. Her mustache is thicker than mine.
No one would have sex with that, not even for pay.
Never. Nope. Won't get me to believe it.

Her oldest child is age 13, so she started having kids at age 16. Now she is 29, so she had 10 kids in 13 years, which means she had an average of 1 child every 1.3 years. So if she keeps having children at the same rate, in another 10 years she will have 7.69 more children, which means that at age 39 she would have 17 children and be 6.21 months pregnant.

So Jenna.......how much are you going to send her so you can spread your wealth??? I mean shes just a victim of her upbringing and circumstance. She can't help it and shouldn't be blamed for her current situation.

She is probably a victim of her upbringing and circumstances, but even victims can and should be blamed for not trying to do what they can to get out of the bad circumstances they found themselves in, and she apparently is not doing that. I agree with those who say that contraception should be mandatory in cases where parents are dependent on government assistance. But I don't think that government assistance should be denied to the children, because they had no choice about who they were born to, and will not be able to do anything to change their circumstances until they are 18.

Mark your calendars, people.
I am going to agree with Jenna. (I know, holy sh!t, right?) Well, conditionally, anyway.
The kids are not to blame, and should definitely recieve public assistance, (in finding new homes with responsible parents).
Then, this professional burden on society of a mother should be exiled to Cuba or Mexico. (They've sent us their criminally insane and irresponsible, we should return the favor).
