Police officer shoots driver in the buttock
Kathleen Baydala
kbaydala@clarionledger.comA Jackson (Mississippi) police officer shot a driver Saturday afternoon after a traffic stop turned into an altercation, police officials said.
Jackson Police Department spokesman Lt. Jeffery Scott said the Precinct 3 officer, whom he would not name, tried to pull over a man in a Kia Spectrum at Hollywood Avenue and Oak Park Drive for a minor traffic offense.
"Once the officer approached the driver, there was an altercation. Our initial investigation reveals the driver attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon and run over the officer," Scott said.
The driver was identified as 27-year-old Milton Grant. The officer shot Grant in the buttock with his service weapon, Scott said.
"Even though he was injured, Grant managed to run and later was found behind a house in the 1300 block of Oak Park Drive," the lieutenant said.
Grant was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and may be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer once he is released.
The officer dragged by the car was treated for minor injuries.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while JPD conducts an internal affairs investigation into whether any procedures regarding the use of deadly force were violated.
JPD also will conduct a simultaneous criminal investigation to determine whether the officer may have broken any state laws. Both investigations are protocol, Scott said.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

The way the crime is charged and under which statutory elements of the offense, can have some effect in the sentencing enhancements: deadly weapon used, intent, reckless disregard, etc. Do not know specifics of this case but have seen the "enhancement" approach to get the AH more prison time.
