David Spade helps Phoenix police buy rifles
Monday, December 22, 2008 5:48 PM EST

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.
The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.
Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Alan Hill says the rifles will be given to patrol officers and that the agency was grateful for the gifts.
"These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help," Spade said in a statement released by his publicist.

This is not the first time David Spade has donated money to police. I have a great amount of respect for him for his actions!

That is an awesome gesture.
But I have to ask...$100K for 50 rifles? WTF $2000 apiece? Are they gold plated?
Seriously...an agency can buy a decent no frills Colt or similar quality rifle for half that I imagine. And if it's because they're pimping them out with lights and optics, etc., I would hope that someone would realize that it's better to have 100 serviceable iron sight rifles rather than half the number outfitted with Aimpoints and Surefires."If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970

David Spade just made a new fan.

I am sure they are buying a few that have all the bells and whistles for their tac. team etc. and they are probably also buying many very basic. Plus have you seen the price of AR-15's lately, they are going through the roof and becoming hard to get (Well thats around here anyways)

Excellent job, Mr. Spade.
On a side note, has anyone ever heard his standup routine? I know it's a few years old, but he had an hour-long special (HBO, maybe) that was HILARIOUS! For reference, it's the routine that ended with the joke "you can't whack off to Autopsy. Of can you?"

Colt is running about 1250 agency price right now - toss in an optic and a light you can hit 2K pretty fast.
As for the 100 serviceable iron sighted guns, I'm not sure I agree. I would have a few years ago, but not any more.

You know what makes this story even better? Spade declined a press conference after the gesture.

Well I guess that earlier after a Phoenix area officer was killed in the line of duty, Spade donated $25K to the officer's family to help them get by.
