Angry Teens torch Ofc's truck for revenge

    http://www.9news.com/news/article.as...6689&catid=188

BOULDER - Police have arrested two 17-year-old boys accused of setting fire to the personal truck of a Boulder Police officer.

Boulder Police say it happened at the officer's home at 11:45 p.m. on Friday as retaliation for a ticket Officer Kevin Granberg gave the boys last month.

Police say Granberg and his family woke up Friday night to find their 2006 Ford F-150 truck on fire.

While he was on the phone with police dispatch, he saw one of the boys running outside his window. He then ran outside and chased the teen. He caught up with the boy and was bringing him to the ground to arrest him when the other teen pushed Granberg over.

Both the teens then ran away.

Other officers arrived and after a chase through yards and over fences, both were caught and taken into custody.

Two officers were taken to the hospital due to injuries they received during the chase, including Granberg. He had problems with his feet because he was running barefoot and had some injuries from when police say he was shoved by one of the teens. The other officer twisted his knee when he caught one of the teens.

Both officers were treated and released.

Police say Granberg had given one of the teens a ticket on Nov. 4 for speeding, failure to provide proof of insurance, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police say according to the other teen, the one who got the ticket was angry and proposed that they go to the officer's home and torch his truck.

It is not clear how the teens knew where Granberg lived.

Both boys were booked into juvenile detention. One faces charges of second-degree arson, retaliating against a witness, resisting arrest and obstruction and the second faces charges of second-degree arson, second-degree assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstruction.

"This is every officer's nightmare - to be targeted by criminals simply for doing his or her job," Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said Saturday in a news release. "We are fortunate that no one was seriously injured and that Officer Granberg and his family are safe. As a community, we cannot tolerate the targeting of those who daily risk their lives for our safety. The Boulder Police Department will work with the District Attorney's Office to see that these suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

According to police, the Boulder Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The truck sustained significant damage.

The courts and the public fairly consistently have no interest in protecting law enforcement. People wonder where police brutality comes from?

Ditto, the parents should be tried for not keeping tabs on their minor children and serve time right along with them.

Too bad this officer will be having to worry about these little shits and others like them harming him and his family. Most cops I know don't like to bring the job home with them. When the job comes to your house anyway and burns your truck it can lead to some serious emotional problems for the leo and his family. I'm not busting your balls, but if start doing this job you will know what I mean. It is examples like this one that demonstrate why I am armed everywhere I go. I've run into too many former customers of mine at the grocery store and such with my family. Shits like this do recognize you out of uniform. If someone I have dealt with in the past actually showed up at my house there would be no quarter, period. The baggage associated with such an episode would not be worth a "free truck".

This is one of probably many reasons that some LEO's don't live in the same city where they work. It cuts down on the possibilities of this thing happening.

I had an incident years ago, where this punk I arrested made threats toward me, saying that he would come to my house for some payback.

I told him in no uncertain terms that if he comes after me, he will have a chance. If he comes anywhere near my family, he would not survive to see the next sunrise.

Guess he saw that I was damned serious about it. Never did come around.

Do NOT f*ck with my family! Period!

I took part in the arrest of a guy who ran from another cop on an ATV years ago. When he was taken into custody, he made a few threats about 'catching me on the street without that badge on'. Months after the arrest, the same guy saw me on the road off-duty in my POV with my daughter, and decided to follow me. Noticing the truck pull a U-turn behind me, I wound around a few turns to make sure he was actually following, and he stayed behind me through about 3 miles of various sidestreets.

I pulled up into a parking lot and exited my car armed (with my sidearm behind my leg). He pulled across the lot and got out, standing and staring for about two minutes without approaching or making any moves before he pulled away. My daughter was directed to the floorboard of the car, and stayed there until I told her it was ok to come up.

I immediately reported the incident to my department, filing a full incident report of it. He was called into my Chief's office, lied about the deal at first but then admitted being there, and was warned to keep his distance. As no 'overt' threat was made by him in the incident, the department saw fit not to charge him. I left it to their discretion without protest, but I wanted it made clear that I would not take a lot of convincing in the future that he meant harm, and would respond accordingly.

Some time later, I happened upon the guy while working an off-duty gig. He came up and wanted to apologize. I explained to him clearly; when I'm working, he is much safer acting like a prick around me than when I'm off, and especially when I have family with me. I consider myself to be a survival-minded officer on the street, but I am first, and foremost, the guardian of my family. I am also armed, both on and off duty.

Its pretty much a universal understanding among cops I've known. Threatening an off-duty cop and/or his family is absolutely suicidal. It takes on a whole new level then. I accepted the risk involved on the job as part of it, my family however, did not. Having them exposed to acts of retaliation crosses a line into no-man's land. If it weren't so understood and considered as gravely serious, by both courts and cops, we'd have a very hard time keeping the ranks of the police filled. These kids are lucky to be alive, in my opinion.

This community has a choice to make. Given their track record I can't hope much, though I hope they make the right decision: back the home owner who was attacked - even though he is a Law Enforcement Officer who was attacked FOR protecting them. Yes, "even though". It sickens me this somehow takes away from the crime in the eyes of the public. I doubt they'd be so willing to forgive if their home and family were attacked.

I looked at the Denver Post comments and they're about how to make these young men pay for the property damage , pay and learn, learn and get on with their lives. Where's the outrage for threatening the lives of this officer's children? How about his wife? His very life and home? From those looking to reform the offenders you'd think this was vandalism.

Examples like the ones in this thread helped change my opinion on gun rights for civilians. I can see how family members of LEOs need to carry firearms to protect themselves from stuff like this. Hope all of you and your families stay safe.

I had a little prob in the past with theft at my house. I now run cameras with IR and it goes to a DVR recorder. It records on motion and soon, I'll be getting a new dvr that I can check the house online. I can view it on our tv also by hitting one of the input buttons.
It wasn't expensive as you would think and if anybody is interested, let me know (PM)I will send you some links. I'm thinking of telling my insurance agent to see if I can get a cheaper rate too.

Jenna..while I really like the sentiment behind this (and you) and that you've "changed your mind," your comment leads me to believe that you only feel that LEO's family members need to carry firearms to protect themselves. I'm not sure if you lead a somehow extremely charmed life, but there are a lot of bad people out there that do not only target LEOs' families. We wouldn't need LEOs if the world is such a safe place to be -- but we do need them because it is not. I sincerely hope that you never have to face something that will change your world view...but I do hope that you do realize that if we cherish our lives and the lives of our families...that owning and carrying a firearm is the responsible and indeed right thing to do... in addition, it is a concept that our Country was founded on.
