Body of missing toddler recovered, police say father has confessed to murder

by Brendan McCarthy, The Times-Picayune Saturday January 03, 2009, 4:00 PM

CHRIS GRANGER / THE TIMES-PICAYUNENew Orleans homicide detectives Harold Wischan, left, and Anthony Pardo, right, escort Danny Platt into central lock up on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Platt is accused of shooting his son to avoid paying child support.

The father of missing toddler Ja'Shawn Powell confessed to murdering his son and led police detectives this afternoon to the boy's body, which had been dumped near a Central City playground, police said.
Ja' Shawn Powell, 2, had been reported missing late Friday night by his father, Danny Platt, 22, police said. New Orleans Police and FBI agents worked through the night and morning and secured the father's confession this afternoon, NOPD officials said at a news conference.
Platt, of the 2800 block of Baronne Street, is expected to be escorted to Orleans Parish Prison within the next hour. He will be booked with first-degree murder, police said.

Platt told police that he did not want to pay his outstanding child support owed to the boy's mother, according to NOPD Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo.

The boy's body was found shortly after noon Saturday behind a house at 1940 Jackson Ave., near an overgrown lot and jungle gym at Van McMurray Playground.

The park is about four blocks from where Platt told police the boy was abducted by three men wielding AK-47s late Friday night.
Platt told investigators that he and his son were standing at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Brainard Street around 11:30 p.m. Friday when three men forced him to the ground at gunpoint, took his son and fled in a dark, 2000-model Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon with black tinted windows and shiny paint, Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release issued mid-morning Saturday.

There were no license plates on the vehicle, which was last seen traveling north on Jackson Avenue, Valencia said. The suspects were described as African-American men, about 29 years old, with shoulder-length dread locks and standing between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet tall.

State Police put out a media advisory early Saturday morning for the missing boy, who was described as about 2-1/2 feet tall and weighing about 48 pounds. An Amber Alert was no issued.
In an interview Saturday with WWL-TV, the child's mother, Daniella Powell, said the boy's father had been ordered Dec. 4 to pay $446 in regular child support, as well as $4,000 in back child support.
Around 8:30 p.m. Friday, the man had called Powell asking to spend the weekend with Ja' Shawn, she said. The man picked up the toddler shortly thereafter. He called back several hours later to say that the child had been kidnapped, then quickly hung up, Powell said.
Powell said she called the boy's father back to ask if he had reported the kidnapping to the police. The man said he had reported it, though when Powell called the police herself, she was told the father had not called, she said.
The father changed his story several times, first telling Powell that a white woman had taken Ja' Shawn out of his arms, then saying that a group of men took the child after looking for a man named Johnny and asking for money, Powell said.
An unkempt lot spanning about two blocks in the heart of Central City, Van McMurray Park is located at Jackson Avenue and Daneel Street. The park backs up to the site of Central City Headstart, where a colorful jungle gym cast an eerie backdrop for Saturday afternoon's gruesome discovery.

Upon being locked up, if the other inmates can get access, he'll pay more than he expected to pay.

If this doesn't make you believe that there is merit in capital punishment, nothing will...

I'm all about the death penalty. But for a guy like this, the DP would be too easy of an out for him. I honestly think we should allow torture as punishment for people like this, and then death. He should have to go through unimaginable suffering for what he has done. Unfortunately, this society will never allow torture to be an official punishment for crimes like this.

Send him to Iraq and let Al Queda take care of him. I hear they are into that kind of stuff.
