EL PASO - Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats. The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico.
Could Mexico collapse?Do you think it is possible that the Mexican government could collapse in 2009? Yes, the drug lords are taking over. No, the government is still strong and will control the violence. I'm not sure, it could still go either way.Voting Requires Javascript

"The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone."
The U.S. Joint Forces Command, based in Norfolk, Va., is one of the Defense Departments combat commands that includes members of the different military service branches, active and reserves, as well as civilian and contract employees. One of its key roles is to help transform the U.S. military's capabilities.
In the foreword, Marine Gen. J.N. Mattis, the USJFC commander, said "Predictions about the future are always risky ... Regardless, if we do not try to forecast the future, there is no doubt that we will be caught off guard as we strive to protect this experiment in democracy that we call America."
The report is one in a serious focusing on Mexico's internal security problems, mostly stemming from drug violence and drug corruption. In recent weeks, the Department of Homeland Security and former U.S. drug czar Barry McCaffrey issued similar alerts about Mexico.
Despite such reports, El Pasoan Veronica Callaghan, a border business leader, said she keeps running into people in the region who "are in denial about what is happening in Mexico."
Last week, Mexican President Felipe Calderon instructed his embassy and consular officials to promote a positive image of Mexico.
The U.S. military report, which also analyzed economic situations in other countries, also noted that China has increased its influence in places where oil fields are present.

IMHO the Mexican Government needs to take an extremely hard stand on the Drug cartels and the corruption. I also dont see this problem getting any better anytime soon. It took years to get it to this point, it will take years to reverse it.

I'd prefer to keep our wars on the other side of the planet.

I don't know how much weight this type of report holds, but the collapse of the mexican government would seem like a very bad thing for us. We think we have an illegal immigration problem now . . . . . .

Maybe if it gets bad enough, the U.S. will finally fight back and close the border militarily. I am not so much an advocate of taking over Mexico and running it, but once it gets bad enough down there people will start crossing faster than they are now and at some point it has got to be stopped.

We have a 'sleeper cell' of around 12 million exiled mexican 'troops' in the U.S., standing ready to return to Mexico and rescue the country from its crisis. While here, they have trained in many various specialties; from civil engineering, agricultural management, urban combat, financial subversion, to covert 'evasion' tactics. I believe their training is complete.

I think its time to 'mobilize' them.

Hard to do away with corruption when the people in charge are corrupt. You can bet the politicians have been getting their palms greased for a long time and still are. Otherwise they would have taken care of this a long time ago.

I have no faith in the Mexican government at all to do anything right. But I don't want to send our people there either to die. That would be an awful mess to get into.

I agree, we need a "Berlin Wall" or something to that effect.

I'd bet good money that if this happens, Obama would open the borders to take in refugees. With the border opened, the drug wars would sure enough move north.

I doubt it. Carter did that and it was a disaster. Obama is a lot of things, but stupid isn't one. The American people are getting sick of illegal immigrants, it's only a tiny population that embraces that idea. Even a lot of liberals see the problems they cause. They may feel sorry for the individuals, but they're not crazy about the drugs and drain on the system. And remember, unions are the primary supporters of the Democratic party and they are against them.
