CARBONDALE - Police announced Thursday they have arrested two men, one of them a Carbondale police officer, in connection with an October bank robbery in which cash drawers were emptied at gunpoint and the two suspects fled on a motorcycle.

The First Southern Bank on West Murphysboro Road was robbed of about $22,000 cash the morning of Oct. 9 by two men concealing their faces under motorcycle helmets. No one was injured.

James D. Gaddis, 26, of Murphysboro was arrested Wednesday without incident. Gaddis, who has worked as a Carbondale police officer since 2004, has been suspended without pay.

The second suspect, Anthony Mitchell Fike, 35, also of Murphysboro turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department on Thursday.

Authorities did not detail the relationship between the two but did say Fike was a neighbor of Gaddis' and works at a local facility for senior citizens.

Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Wepsiec said both men are charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony punishable upon conviction by a minimum of six years and a maximum of 30 years.

Since there was a firearm used in the crime, Wepsiec said state law mandates an additional 15 years.

Gaddis and Fike are being held in the Jackson County Jail, with Gaddis isolated from other prisoners, Sheriff Bob Burns said.

Flanked by Interim Police Chief Jeff Grubbs and Carbondale Mayor Brad Cole at news conference inside the Carbondale Civic Center on Thursday, Wepsiec called the charges against Gaddis revolting.

"If the charge is proven true, Mr. Gaddis not only violated the law, but also betrayed his oath of office and the trust which his fellow officers and the citizens of this community placed in him," said Wepsiec.

Fike's bond was set at $50,000 while bond for Gaddis is $1 million.

"That's what I asked the judge for," Wepsiec said of Gaddis' bond. "I think it's pretty obvious why."

Authorities did not reveal any details about how the investigation led to Gaddis and Fike, but Wepsiec said those details will be revealed at trial and that the investigation made it "abundantly clear a police officer was involved."

Without elaborating, Wepsiec alleged Gaddis "used some of his tools as a police officer to perpetrate the robbery."

But even as a Carbondale police officer, Gaddis would have been unable to influence the investigation Wepsiec said.

"Because he was a patrol officer, he was pretty much out of the loop," he said.

Cole said that the alleged conduct of one officer is not indicative of the Carbondale police force as a whole, which he said has been recognized as being among the best in the country.

"Have no doubt that I have complete confidence in all of our city employees念191;?in particular our public safety officers," he said.

Wepsiec said he would not comment as to what Gaddis' motive might have been.

However, files with the Jackson County Circuit Clerk show a company called Flagstar Bank FSB had filed mortgage foreclosure proceedings against a James D. Gaddis in December.

In addition to the FBI and Jackson County state's attorney's office, Carbondale police were joined in the investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Murphysboro Police Department, Illinois State Police and the U.S. attorney's office.

Gaddis is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 30 for a preliminary hearing.

    Terrific. Another black eye.

If this turns out to be true, then he will hopefully get what he deserves in prison.
