Guardsman wounded in gas station shootout

    By ALEXIS STEVENS

    Thursday, April 09, 2009
An Army National Guardsman who was scheduled to deploy to Iraq in September was at Grady Memorial Hospital on Thursday night, recovering from gunshot wounds after exchanging fire with some alleged assailants.
Carlis Franks, 21, was shot multiple times while at a Gresham Road Citgo shortly after midnight Thursday, according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Franks went in the gasoline station to buy snacks, said his grandfather Ronald Dawson. When he was getting back in his car, men in another car began shooting. No motive was given for the attack.
Franks told police he was carrying a gun and returned fire. It was not known if he hit any of his attackers. They fled in a red Lexus, and Franks drove himself five blocks to his Wee Kirk Road home, Dawson and police said.
“He ran in the house screaming, ‘Call somebody! I’ve been shot!’” Dawson said.
Franks believes there were three men and a woman in the car, the grandfather said.
Police have not caught the suspects, though a surveillance camera at the gas station recorded the shootings, Dawson and police said.
Franks was transported to Grady, where his is being treated for five gunshot wounds, Dawson said. He said it was unclear whether Franks would be able to deport to Iraq.

A fuller account of what happened, along with some of the surveillance footage, can be found here: Army Guardsman Shot While Buying Chips - Speakers Bureau News Story - WSB Atlanta

Franks exits the store and a man asks him for a cigarette lighter. Franks says no and later a red Lexus is shown pulling away. Franks tries to leave in his own car, a white Lexus, and the red Lexus pulls in front of him and blocks him in. The video shows two people get out of the red Lexus and confront Franks, who is still seated in his car. That's when shots are exchanged.

It seems to unfold like a robbery ruse, but I don't think investigators have confirmed that robbery was the motive. We shall see . . .

You are shot on scene but drive five blocks to get assistance? Why not on scene?

Again, it all strikes me as odd.

Yep, I agree. Also odd that going to get Funyans and Starbursts at this store at 0200 is a "nightly routine" for Franks (so says the uncle). And, if you watch the tape, there appears to be a little banter going on between Franks and the two people who got out of the red Lexus. This doesn't jive with the AJC report that "when (Franks) was getting back in his car, men in another car began shooting."

Once again, it seems to unfold like a robbery ruse, but how many apparent robberies, carjackings, home invasions have you seen where the real story goes much deeper?

I'm more curious about the "friend he dropped off."
